{"id":25502,"date":"2013-09-17T00:50:58","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T03:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=25502"},"modified":"2016-11-26T00:47:30","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T03:47:30","slug":"mrff-atheists-commissary-manager-grumble-over-bibles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/17\/mrff-atheists-commissary-manager-grumble-over-bibles\/","title":{"rendered":"MRFF, Atheists, Commissary Manager Grumble over Bibles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Torpy, a former Army Captain and current atheist, previously claimed to have influenced the Air Force to remove Gideon Bibles from hotel room <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/17\/air-force-may-remove-bibles-from-military-hotel-rooms\/\">checklists for Air Force lodging facilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Critics had claimed this would end the presence of the Bibles altogether; the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/20\/update-air-force-inns-and-bibles\/\">Air Force disagreed<\/a>, but Torpy <em>agreed<\/em> &#8212; and that is what he wanted, as he called the Bibles Christian &#8220;privilege.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It seems the original complaint came not from a member of the military but from civilian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DaninJapan\">Daniel Smith<\/a>, the Store Director for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commissaries.com\/stores\/html\/store.cfm?dodaac=hqcwhk\">Navy Commissary in Yokosuka, Japan<\/a>.\u00a0 He recently complained &#8212; again &#8212; because there were shockingly <em>still<\/em> Bibles available to Air Force lodging patrons:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/comsmith1.jpg\" width=\"495\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Air Force never publicly said it would remove Bibles <!--more-->from Air Force lodging; in fact, they said the opposite.\u00a0 Smith eventually explained how he instigated the original complaint:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/comsmith2.jpg\" width=\"399\" height=\"164\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At any rate, Smith seems to have woefully misunderstood &#8220;the rules.&#8221;\u00a0 Rather than correct him, however, Torpy, who has a long <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/06\/atheist-misrepresents-facts-in-crusade-for-atheist-chaplains\/\">reputation for misrepresenting facts<\/a>, <em>furthers<\/em> his confusion:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/comtorpy.jpg\" width=\"397\" height=\"107\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Torpy calls the presence of the Bibles &#8220;selective noncompliance&#8221; and says they shouldn&#8217;t be there, which is not what the Air Force said &#8212; even if what&#8217;s Torpy and Smith <em>wanted<\/em>.\u00a0 Torpy goes on to imply the Air Force Inns need further intimidation to force them to finally remove the Bibles\u00a0&#8212; which he is likely to provide.\u00a0 Given that this incident hasn&#8217;t risen to the public yet, the Air Force Inns probably won&#8217;t see anyone rise to defend them.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s essentially how Torpy &#8220;won&#8221; the first time.\u00a0 The change he demanded to the hotel checklist wasn&#8217;t made public until it was done; at that point, religious liberty defenders criticized the move, but Air Force Inns essentially shrugged them off, as it was done.\u00a0 (Therein lies Torpy&#8217;s main difference with Michael Weinstein.\u00a0 Weinstein&#8217;s uses publicity as a weapon to advance his cause, while Torpy <em>avoids<\/em> it to advance <em>his<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>In the end, it is both amusing and disheartening to see the commissary manager say it is &#8220;clearly a violation of the Constitution&#8221;
