{"id":2499,"date":"2009-12-03T00:25:02","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T08:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=2499"},"modified":"2009-12-02T22:37:29","modified_gmt":"2009-12-03T06:37:29","slug":"crew-mistake-led-to-f-15e-crash-in-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/03\/crew-mistake-led-to-f-15e-crash-in-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Crew Mistake Led to F-15E Crash in Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Air Force and the <em>Air Force Times<\/em> have published articles releasing information on the\u00a0crash of an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/aircraft.htm#F-15E\"> F-15E <em>Strike Eagle<\/em><\/a> in Afghanistan in July.\u00a0 The crash claimed the lives of the both the fighter pilot, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/05\/fighter-pilot-remembered-for-christian-faith\/\">Capt Mark McDowell<\/a>,\u00a0and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/fighterpilotspeak.htm#WSO\">WSO<\/a>, Capt Thomas Granith.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123179983\">investigation determined<\/a> that the two-man crew was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2009\/12\/airforce_f15e_crash_120109w\/\">executing a simulated attack<\/a> for training on their way back to base.\u00a0 The planned attack was a high-angle night strafe against a ground target.\u00a0 After their flight lead aborted a simulated attack <!--more-->due to poor parameters, the wingmen executed their attack and impacted the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Night attacks on night vision goggles (NVGs) are extremely challenging.\u00a0 While some may find it difficult to believe that a pilot could simply fly into the ground, it is important to note that executing NVG attacks is generally done with a complete lack of cultural lighting and other clues that would otherwise provide a pilot with depth perception and feeling of height (or ground rush).\u00a0 They fly into the ground because they think they&#8217;re much higher than they really are.<\/p>\n<p>An almost identical set of circumstances led to the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/29\/fighter-pilots-inexperience-led-to-fatal-crash\/\">fatal crash of an F-16 in June<\/a>, just a month prior to this incident.<\/p>\n<p>Both aircraft do have systems that, when working properly, warn pilots that ground impact is imminent.\u00a0 However, if the system sounds a warning when the pilot doesn&#8217;t expect it (he doesn&#8217;t know he is as close to the ground as he really is), the momentary confusion may be enough of a delay to prevent a safe recovery.\u00a0 The result is known as &#8220;CFIT,&#8221; or &#8220;Controlled Flight into Terrain,&#8221; which is what happens when an aviator flies a perfectly functional airplane into the ground, generally unaware.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, the military began research on technology that would allow the aircraft to &#8220;take control&#8221; from the pilot in order to avoid a collision with the ground.\u00a0 NASA is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenselink.mil\/news\/newsarticle.aspx?id=46919\">currently conducting tests<\/a> on such a system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Air Force and the Air Force Times have published articles releasing information on the\u00a0crash of an F-15E Strike Eagle in Afghanistan in July.\u00a0 The crash claimed the lives of the both the fighter pilot, Capt Mark McDowell,\u00a0and the WSO, Capt Thomas Granith.
