{"id":24962,"date":"2013-08-15T01:00:11","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T04:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=24962"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:04:10","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:04:10","slug":"navy-info-chief-to-michael-weinstein-cut-out-adjectives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/15\/navy-info-chief-to-michael-weinstein-cut-out-adjectives\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy Info Chief for Michael Weinstein: Cut out Adjectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Navy Chief of Information RADM John Kirby didn&#8217;t write a personal letter to Michael Weinstein, but he might have been thinking about him when he emailed naval\u00a0officers and told them to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/blogs\/stripes-central\/stripes-central-1.8040\/jargon-convoluted-obfuscation-profundicates-honcho-1.234656\">stop the &#8220;jargon and gibberish,&#8221;<\/a> as well as <strong>excessive adjectives<\/strong>.\u00a0 Criticizing his own service&#8217;s communications efforts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/159121610\/John-Kirby-on-Writing\">RADM Kirby said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019ve never met an adjective or adverb we didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t &#8220;exploit operations in the electromagnetic spectrum.&#8221;\u00a0 We fully exploit them.\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t integrate functions; we seamlessly integrate them&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another example&#8230;about the Zumwalt-class <!--more-->destroyer:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This advanced warship will provide offensive, distributed, and precision fires in support of forces ashore and will provide acredible forward naval presence while operating independently or as an integral part of naval, joint or combined expeditionary strike forces.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I count 14 adjectives in that sentence, maybe three of which are necessary. If you remove the 11 others, you come up with this:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This warship will provide fires in support of forces ashore and will provide a naval presence while operating independently or as a part of expeditionary forces.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s still a bit stodgy, but it\u2019s a whole lot easier to understand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As been highlighted here before,\u00a0adjective abuse\u00a0has long been a hallmark of Michael Weinstein&#8217;s diatribes.\u00a0 (In just one example, a 50-word Weinstein press statement was <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/24\/michael-weinstein-us-marines-are-threat-to-national-security\/\">almost one-third unnecessary adjectives<\/a>.)\u00a0\u00a0Weinstein similarly relies on\u00a0alliteration, mostly to provide his critics with affectionate appellations. Weinstein once called ChristianFighterPilot.com\u00a0the &#8220;Prince of Problems,&#8221; and referred to LtGen Caslen&#8217;s assignment as Division Commander\u00a0as a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/02\/weinstein-blasts-commandants-assignment\/\">trifecta of tragedy<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Weinstein&#8217;s bloviating is so over the top that even <em>his own MRFF staff mocks it<\/em>, though they presumably still support the message hidden behind the numerous and innumerable adjectives.\u00a0 When one of their supporters criticized Weinstein&#8217;s writing style, though, the MRFF <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org\/2013\/08\/mr-weinstein-needs-an-editor\/\">derided and mocked<\/a>\u00a0<em>their own donor<\/em>.\u00a0 That caused <em>another<\/em> supporter to second the criticism and take them to task for an &#8220;overheated&#8221; defense of an &#8220;accurate&#8221; criticism of Weinstein.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s how they treat <em>people who send them money, <\/em>nevermind their ideological opposition.\u00a0 It would seem the MRFF&#8217;s blind deference for their king knows no limits.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to what\u00a0RADM Kirby concluded, for Weinstein<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s time to put down the adjectives and back away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2013\/08\/09\/today_s_summit_with_the_russians_can_hagel_kerry_close_a_deal_obama_to_speak_to_\">reference to Foreign Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Navy Chief of Information RADM John Kirby didn&#8217;t write a personal letter to Michael Weinstein, but he might have been thinking about him when he emailed naval\u00a0officers and told them to stop the &#8220;jargon and gibberish,&#8221; as well as excessive adjectives.\u00a0 Criticizing his own service&#8217;s communications efforts, RADM Kirby said: We\u2019ve never met an adjective or adverb we didn\u2019t like.
