{"id":24927,"date":"2013-08-12T00:15:30","date_gmt":"2013-08-12T03:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=24927"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:05:02","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:05:02","slug":"commander-threatens-soldier-for-religious-facebook-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/12\/commander-threatens-soldier-for-religious-facebook-post\/","title":{"rendered":"Commander Threatens Soldier for Religious Facebook Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/uncategorized\/soldier-faces-punishment-for-christian-beliefs.html\">noted at FoxNews<\/a>, a Colorado Springs-based US servicemember posted her opinion on Facebook &#8212; and has been threatened by her commander as a result:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The soldier, who is an evangelical Christian, said she returned home from church on Sunday and was watching a documentary about a minister who endorsed homosexuality&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Her Facebook message read:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>A lot ticked off, now to all my gay friends you know I care about you so don\u2019t think otherwise. I\u2019m watching this documentary and this gay guy went to a church and the Pastor was telling him that he needs to embrace his way and know that it is not a sin. Ok umm wow, dude it is. I\u2019m sick of people making Gods word what it\u2019s not. Yes God loves you as a person but He hates the sin. Tired of hearing about Pastors being ok with homosexuality.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She was reportedly told to<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>either remove the post or face a reduction in rank and pay.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is contradictory information about whether she is an Airman or a Soldier, which may be just as well, as she wasn&#8217;t seeking to make a public statement and actually asked Fox to pull the article, which it did for a short time.\u00a0 She appears to have substantial <!--more-->support, however, as retired Chaplain (Col) Ron Crews, representing the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cJust because a person wears a uniform does not mean they give up their religious liberties and their ability to speak about matters of faith,\u201d Crews told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>Crews said the Chaplain Alliance has been in contact with [her] and said they play on being fully supportive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There have been a couple of instances in which the US military targeted servicemembers for their online statements &#8212; though those were (<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/30\/marine-to-be-punished-over-twitter-post\/\">almost<\/a>) exclusively <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/27\/facebook-marine-expresses-regret\/\"><em>political<\/em> statements<\/a>, which are expressly regulated by DoD policies.<\/p>\n<p>There is no equivalent regulation on the expression of <em>religious<\/em> beliefs (though <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/17\/af-publishes-new-reg-on-religion-social-media-house-cleaning\/\">one Air Force regulation<\/a> does say Airmen should &#8220;<strong>confidently<\/strong> practice [their] own beliefs&#8221;) &#8212; but there <em>is<\/em> an explicit statement in the US Constitution prohibiting the government from <em>interfering<\/em> with the exercise of those beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, it is worth noting\u00a0that <em>current<\/em> US law generally protects the Soldier&#8217;s statements, as it says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Armed Forces <strong>shall accommodate the beliefs of a member of the armed forces<\/strong> reflecting the conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs of the member and, in so far as practicable, <strong>may not use such beliefs as the basis of any adverse personnel action, discrimination<\/strong>, or denial of promotion, schooling, training, or assignment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u00a0military <em>can<\/em> take action\u00a0if\u00a0otherwise protected\u00a0&#8220;actions and speech&#8221; violate the UCMJ or<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>threaten good order and discipline.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not to be confused with the <em>proposed<\/em> law that would &#8220;strengthen&#8221; this <em>current<\/em> law.\u00a0 This is the very thing that US Rep John Fleming&#8217;s amendment to the 2014 NDAA was intended to protect &#8212; something he said the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/19\/michael-weinstein-inspires-congressional-action-part-1\/\">2013 version was <em>supposed<\/em> to protect<\/a>, but was not being applied properly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Pentagon, especially the Air Force, has clearly demonstrated an <strong>overly narrow interpretation<\/strong> of how Christian chaplains and military members <strong>are allowed to express their beliefs, even off duty.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This US troop was clearly off duty, benignly expressing a personal religious statement &#8212; and her commander threatened her rank,\u00a0pay, and career.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds an awful lot like a &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; issue to some people &#8212; but apparently not Michael &#8220;Mikey&#8221; Weinstein.\u00a0 He and his &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; &#8220;charity&#8221; have not risen to defend against allegations that <em>Christians<\/em> have had their religious liberties threatened.\u00a0 In fact, members of his MRFF have <em>called for <\/em>restrictions on Christians religious liberties &#8212; at least, restrictions on those Michael Weinstein deems to be the wrong <em>kind<\/em> of Christians.<\/p>\n<p>The entire premise is a setup for a slippery slope.\u00a0 For example, if simply and benignly\u00a0<em>stating<\/em> a tenet of mainstream Christianity &#8220;threatens good order and discipline&#8221;
