{"id":24608,"date":"2013-07-29T00:19:49","date_gmt":"2013-07-29T03:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=24608"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:09:34","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:09:34","slug":"af-fighter-pilot-col-bud-day-dies-at-88","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/29\/af-fighter-pilot-col-bud-day-dies-at-88\/","title":{"rendered":"AF Fighter Pilot Col Bud Day Dies at 88"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US Air Force Colonel (Retired) George &#8220;Bud&#8221; Day <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/us\/col-bud-day-medal-of-honor-recipient-dies-at-88-1.232672\">passed away this weekend at the age of 88<\/a>.\u00a0 Col Day received the Medal of Honor following his 5 and a half year stint as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, where he bunked with now-Senator John McCain much of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that, Col Day was enlisted as a US Marine in World War II and an Air Force Pilot during the Korean War.\u00a0 He flew the F-84 <em>Thunderjet<\/em> in Korea and was flying an F-100 <em>Super Sabre<\/em> when he was shot down in Vietnam.\u00a0 After he was <!--more-->repatriated in 1973, he underwent rehabilitation for his significant physical injuries, and he would eventually fly the F-4 <em>Phantom II<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He had a significant retired career and frequently spoke to a wide variety of audiences, including <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/03\/christian-fighter-pilot-addresses-usafa\/\">the US Air Force Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of Col Day&#8217;s most notable post-Air Force endeavors was a lawsuit against the US military after it tried to end free, lifetime healthcare for its retirees as a cost-cutting measure.\u00a0 The lawsuit ultimately failed, though it spurred Congress to force the Department of Defense to alter its plans and extend care beyond age 65 for military retirees.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of ideology or politics, he was considered one of the greats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Air Force Colonel (Retired) George &#8220;Bud&#8221; Day passed away this weekend at the age of 88.\u00a0 Col Day received the Medal of Honor following his 5 and a half year stint as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, where he bunked with now-Senator John McCain much of the time.
