{"id":24228,"date":"2013-08-14T00:41:44","date_gmt":"2013-08-14T03:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=24228"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:04:43","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:04:43","slug":"commander-troops-ordered-not-to-have-opinion-on-dadt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/14\/commander-troops-ordered-not-to-have-opinion-on-dadt\/","title":{"rendered":"Commander: Troops Ordered Not to Have Opinion on DADT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to an <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/airman-punished-for-objecting-to-gay-marriage-in-military-chapel.html\">ongoing story<\/a> covered at FoxNews, Utah Air National Guard TSgt Layne Wilson was reprimanded after writing a letter to a West Point chaplain regarding a post-DADT\u00a0chapel ceremony, which presumably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/article\/20121201\/NEWS\/212010304\/West-Point-chapel-hosts-1st-same-sex-wedding\">occurred last December<\/a>.\u00a0 The text of his letter does not appear to be completely available, but <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/military-will-not-rescind-reprimand-for-airman-opposed-to-gay-marriage.html\">it said in part<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Our base chapels are a place of worship and this is a mockery to God and our military core values. I have proudly served 27 years and this is a slap in the face to us who have put our lives on the line for this country. I hope sir that you will take appropriate action so this does not happen again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, West Point complained to the Utah Air National Guard, and Wilson&#8217;s supervisor gave him a Letter of Reprimand because he<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cfailed to render the proper respect to a commissioned officer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given that only part of the story is public, it is difficult to fully discuss. On the other hand, another part of the conversation <em>is<\/em> public and may stand on its own. As noted in a memo from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ut.ngb.army.mil\/html\/pao\/pressrelease\/2012\/pr12-023.html\">LtCol Kevin Tobias<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.151arw.ang.af.mil\/resources\/factsheets\/factsheet.asp?id=11717\">130th Engineering Installation Squadron commander<\/a>, following this incident [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We talked about his feelings about DADT and <!--more-->how he doesn\u2019t agree with it,\u201d Tobias wrote. \u201cI then told him that maybe <strong>this is a good time for him to move on because we\u2019ve been ordered to not have an opinion about gays in the military<\/strong> and we need to treat them as we would treat anyone else in the service of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also reiterated that I respect his feelings but <strong>I\u2019m not comfortable reenlisting him with his strong feelings<\/strong> about this matter.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the number of written statements, it seems a substantial amount of paperwork may actually exist on this matter.\u00a0 Just the little that has been released &#8212; which includes names, dates, units, etc. &#8212; provides substantiating evidence for the claims made by the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/10\/congressmen-advocates-call-for-military-religious-freedom\/\">Military Religious Freedom Coalition <\/a>and Congressmen like Representative John Fleming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To be clear,\u00a0a serving US military member was told by his commanding officer that he should get out of the military &#8212; and his commander hesitated to reenlist him in the military &#8212;\u00a0for no other reason than\u00a0<em>his religious <strong>beliefs<\/strong><\/em> regarding the policy known as Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, there has never been a <em>single<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">substantiated<\/span> story\u00a0of a US troop being told by his commander\u00a0he wasn&#8217;t fit for service, or being told he\u00a0was not &#8220;comfortable&#8221; being reenlisted,\u00a0because he wasn&#8217;t a Christian, which is Michael Weinstein&#8217;s hollow but repetitive drumbeat.\u00a0 To that point, this is only the <em>latest<\/em> example in which Weinstein&#8217;s &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; charity has apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/15\/congressman-explains-military-religious-freedom-bill\/\">declined to come out in defense<\/a> of\u00a0a <em>Christian<\/em> US troop&#8217;s claims of discrimination based on religious belief.\u00a0 Weinstein apparently refuses to defend Wilson&#8217;s religious liberty\u00a0because he&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/17\/religious-freedom-critic-weinstein-admits-targeting-christians\/\">wrong <em>kind<\/em> of Christian<\/a>, by Weinstein&#8217;s definition.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, <em>current <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/bills\/112\/hr4310\/text\">US law<\/a> explicitly <em>requires<\/em> the military to accommodate the beliefs of troops [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Armed Forces <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shall<\/span> accommodate the beliefs<\/strong> of a member of the armed forces reflecting the conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs of the member and, in so far as practicable, <strong>may not use such beliefs as the basis of any adverse<\/strong> personnel action, discrimination, <strong>or denial<\/strong> of promotion, schooling, training, or assignment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Coincidentally, there is a proposal to stiffen the language of this section because it is not being &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/15\/congressman-explains-military-religious-freedom-bill\/\">enforced<\/a>&#8221; as Congress intended.)<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not TSgt Wilson &#8220;failed to render proper respect&#8221; to an officer is one topic.\u00a0 Completely separate from that, however,\u00a0is whether the Air Force\u00a0is legally permitted to use an Airman&#8217;s <em>beliefs<\/em> as a basis for a reenlistment decision.\u00a0\u00a0(Reportedly, TSgt Wilson, a full-time\u00a0National Guardsman,\u00a0saw his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\/washingtonupdate\/victory-layne-guardsman-wins-scrap-over-marriage\">6-year contract\u00a0replaced<\/a> with a one-year part time contract &#8212; a move that was only reversed after his lawyer complained.)<\/p>\n<p>It would seem the original statement from the\u00a0Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff\u00a0&#8212; that those who disagreed with repeal should &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com\/2010\/03\/25\/top-general-in-hot-water-over-gay-policy\/\">vote with their feet<\/a>&#8221; rather than serve &#8212; is a prevailing sentiment, despite the DoD&#8217;s apparently official policies that no servicemembers would be required to change their beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/dadtreportsupportplan.pdf\">Support Plan for Implementation<\/a> of DADT repeal, which is still cited on current official US military sites, <em>specifically <\/em>says US troops can still &#8220;freely practice their religion&#8221;
