{"id":23574,"date":"2013-06-27T01:41:14","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T04:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=23574"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:23:36","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:23:36","slug":"big-mountain-jesus-prevails-in-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/27\/big-mountain-jesus-prevails-in-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Mountain Jesus Prevails in Lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Big Mountain Jesus (Becket)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/montana.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though atheists had previously called on Jesus to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/08\/atheists-demand-jesus-come-down-from-montana-mountain\/\">come down from a Montana mountain<\/a> ski slope, a Federal district court has said he can stay.<\/p>\n<p>As previously discussed, the Freedom From Religion Foundation had sued because the US Forest Service renewed a special use permit that has allowed the statue to stand for more than 50 years.\u00a0 The Knights of Columbus put it up in 1954 in honor of <!--more-->Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division who saw similar monuments in Italy during the second World War.<\/p>\n<p>As noted at <a href=\"http:\/\/religionclause.blogspot.com\/2013\/06\/jesus-statue-on-federal-land-leased-to.html\">the Religion Clause<\/a>, the court <a href=\"http:\/\/www.becketfund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/2013-06-24-MSJ-Order.pdf\">did say<\/a> the monument has become &#8220;more of a historical landmark and a curiosity&#8221; than a religious item.\u00a0 As such,\u00a0it did not offend the US Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Don Byrd of the secularist Baptist Joint Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjconline.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=5653&amp;Itemid=134\">said this was a bad outcome<\/a> because it was actually offensive to religion, but Byrd accurately conveys the wholly incorrect reasoning of those who oppose such memorials and displays when he says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The idea is disturbing that a monument to Christ can lose its religious significance&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, Byrd&#8217;s assertion is asinine, as Judge Dana Christensen explicitly said the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/federal-judge-dismisses-suit-against-montanas-big-mountain-jesus-98866\/\">monument was &#8220;unquestionably&#8221; religious<\/a>.\u00a0 Second, it <em>wasn&#8217;t<\/em> &#8220;a monument to Christ.&#8221;\u00a0 It was a monument to the 10th Mountain Division.\u00a0 It was a reflection of their experiences, as <em>they<\/em> indicated.<\/p>\n<p>Just as a cross isn&#8217;t always a Christian crucifix, sometimes a memorial can just be a memorial.\u00a0 Critics like the FFRF and others are blinded by their obsession to have religious symbols removed from the public square &#8212; even when they are there for non-religious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Big Mountain Jesus had been defended by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.becketfund.org\/montanajesusvictory\/\">hailed the decision<\/a> as a victory for common sense:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe still don\u2019t know if a tree falling in a forest makes a sound. But we can be sure that a lonely Jesus statue standing in a Montana forest doesn\u2019t create an official state religion for the United States,\u201d said Eric Rassbach, Deputy General Counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Forest Service initially gave in to the FRFF, and reversed itself only after significant reaction from the public.\u00a0 It is the latest example of one of several anti-religion organizations who try to use the threat of litigation as a &#8220;heckler&#8217;s veto&#8221; on religious liberty &#8212; and the positive results when people stand up to them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though atheists had previously called on Jesus to come down from a Montana mountain ski slope, a Federal district court has said he can stay.
