Again."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 6th, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/2013\/06\/06\/commemorations-marking-6th-anniversary-allied-invasion-france-begin-with-flag\/\">many outlets<\/a> highlighted the <a href=\"http:\/\/gazette.com\/rss\/gazette.com\/d-day-anniversary-commemorations-begin-in-france\/article\/feed\/11101\">69th anniversary<\/a> of the D-Day landings that would ultimately free Europe from the reign of Nazi terror.\u00a0 They also highlighted the fact that thousands of US servicemembers died storming the beaches, many of whom are buried in France and Luxembourg.\u00a0 Iconic images recall the price:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kneeling at Normandy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/dday.jpg\" width=\"423\" height=\"245\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>WWII and D-Day veteran Raymond Moon kneels before the grave of a fallen comrade at the American cemetery at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on Friday, June 4, 2004. (AP Photo\/Laura Rauch) \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/article\/20130605\/OPINION\/306050119\/Memories-from-American-Cemetery-Normandy\">ASSOCIATED PRESS<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the world remembered that sacrifice, however, inappropriate timing by atheists tried to doom the memory of <!--more-->such imagery.<\/p>\n<p>Just days earlier, the American Humanist Association <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rs\/2013\/06\/02\/atheist-group-sues-california-city-over-divisively-religious-memorial\/\">filed a lawsuit against the City of Lake Elsinore<\/a> because it planned to erect a Veterans&#8217; Memorial that was supposed to look something like this artist&#8217;s rendition:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Lake Elsinore Memorial\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/elsinore.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This has actually been going on for several years.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/Lake-Elsinore-Sued-Over-Cross-on-Planned-City-Monument-210126731.html\">original design<\/a>, identical to the one used in <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/15\/atheists-broaden-attacks-on-military-memorials\/\">King, North Carolina<\/a>,\u00a0included only the cross; the <a href=\"http:\/\/lakeelsinore-wildomar.patch.com\/groups\/editors-picks\/p\/lawsuit-filed-against-city-of-lake-elsinore-over-memorial-depicting-religious-symbols\">field of crosses and the Star of David were added<\/a> to make the image look more like a military cemetery &#8212; purely to satisfy the critics.<\/p>\n<p>It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanhumanist.org\/news\/details\/2013-05-american-humanist-association-sues-city-of-lake-elsi\">didn&#8217;t work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The city has clearly violated the First Amendment by unnecessarily choosing a divisively religious means of honoring our veterans,\u201d said William Burgess, an attorney with the Appignani Humanist Legal Center. \u201cIn addition, the California constitution prohibits any governmental funding whatsoever for religious purposes, including religious monuments.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The city &#8220;<strong>clearly<\/strong> violated the First Amendment,&#8221; despite the fact they&#8217;re using an instantly recognizable image that is, as noted above, iconic &#8212; and even current.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kneeling at the Battlefield Cross\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/battlecross.jpg\" width=\"378\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perennial military atheist critic Jason Torpy is the Treasurer for the AHA, but he wasn&#8217;t the only one helping the cause.\u00a0 US Marine Sgt Paul Loebe,\u00a0representing American Atheists, eloquently said the city council was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/freethoughtblogs.com\/rockbeyondbelief\/2013\/06\/04\/lake-elsinore-california-gives-the-finger-to-foxhole-atheists\/\">giving the finger to foxhole atheists<\/a>&#8221; and called on his supporters to flood their offices with emails and phone calls, for which he provided the contact information.\u00a0 Loebe himself repeated (<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/25\/military-atheist-chaplain-amendment-fails\/\">again<\/a>) the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/03\/maaf-misrepresents-data-in-brief-to-white-house\/\">long-debunked demographics<\/a> that\u00a0try to overstate the number of atheists\u00a0in the military.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a decorated combat veteran with multiple tours to both Iraq and Afghanistan I am deeply offended&#8230;It is not just myself, or the nearly 21% of the military who claim to be non-religious, but also those of minority faiths who you greatly insult and misrepresent&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>You may disregard this message if you wish but I assure you it will be made public and my fellow foxhole atheists will be in touch.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addressing the council via email, Loebe then veers off into left field:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You claim that it is historical in context but that in itself is a lie perpetuated by false historians like David Barton.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Who?\u00a0 What does that\u00a0have to do with World War II, or the imagery of a Soldier kneeling at his fallen comrade&#8217;s headstone?\u00a0 The search for offense knows no bounds.<\/p>\n<p>To the average American, that image recalls the image of a Soldier mourning at his comrade&#8217;s headstone.\u00a0 To a few hypersensitive military atheists, it represents an illegal \u201cChristian shrine.&#8221;\u00a0 In response, more than a few people have suggested replacing this or similar images with the &#8220;battlefield cross,&#8221; which consists of the overturned rifle, helmet, and boots.<\/p>\n<p>While that might seem like a satisfactory compromise (at least in the modern era, to which it is more often connected), remember that former Army Captain Jason Torpy, who has led much of these atheist attacks, even thinks the battlefield <em><strong>cross<\/strong><\/em> should be re-named.<\/p>\n<p>This is only the most recent memorial to be attacked; <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/26\/another-military-memorial-targeted-for-its-cross\/\">many others<\/a> have <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/26\/atheists-demand-removal-of-cross-from-war-memorial-again\/\">preceded it<\/a>, and there are <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/01\/memorial-crosses-as-us-military-tradition\/\">many more around the world<\/a> that will likely follow should it fall.\u00a0 Some atheists will stop at nothing until every cross is pulled from the public view, no matter how benign &#8212;
