{"id":23485,"date":"2013-06-24T00:01:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-24T03:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=23485"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:24:35","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:24:35","slug":"bill-seeks-to-modify-discharges-under-dadt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/24\/bill-seeks-to-modify-discharges-under-dadt\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Seeks to Modify Discharges under DADT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US Rep Chuck Rangel (D-NY) has proposed legislation to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/us\/bill-would-upgrade-records-of-those-discharged-under-dadt-1.226901\">&#8220;upgrade&#8221; the discharge status<\/a> of those servicemembers who were kicked out of the military for being homosexual while it was illegal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All servicemembers discharged because of sexual orientation would receive a \u201ctimely, consistent and transparent\u201d review, and those who served honorably would see their records upgraded. \u00a0 Any indication of a servicemember\u2019s sexual orientation would be struck <!--more-->from their record, and consensual relations between same-sex couples would be decriminalized \u2014 bringing military law in line with Supreme Court rulings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While it sounds sweeping, the bill would likely affect few servicemembers who have served since DADT was passed in the early 1990s.\u00a0 After that, many discharges under DADT were &#8220;honorable,&#8221; so long as there wasn&#8217;t another mitigating factor.\u00a0 That&#8217;s actually why there are urban legends &#8212; which aren&#8217;t actually legends &#8212; of people who claimed to be homosexual simply so they could get out of the military, with an honorable discharge.<\/p>\n<p>Comments at the <em>Stars and Stripes<\/em> are mixed, with a substantial number of commenters agreeing that while DADT may be repealed today, it doesn&#8217;t change the fact homosexuals lied during their enlistment.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tospeakthetruth: They lied about their &#8220;status&#8221;. They deserved the discharges they received and do not deserve an upgrade.
