{"id":23144,"date":"2013-05-28T01:32:07","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T04:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=23144"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:28:18","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:28:18","slug":"military-leaders-call-for-moral-courage-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/28\/military-leaders-call-for-moral-courage-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Military Leaders Call for Moral Courage, Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the face of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/03\/13\/us\/military-sexual-assault\/index.html\">&#8220;sexual assault&#8221; scandal<\/a> in the US military, Department of Defense leaders fanned out across graduation ceremonies to call on new and graduating officers to live out moral courage.\u00a0 From Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/\/speeches\/speech.aspx?speechid=1782\">speaking to the graduating class<\/a> of 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2013\/05\/25\/hagel-cadets-must-stamp-out-sex-assault-scourge\/\">at West Point<\/a>\u00a0[ellipses original]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When you are faced with difficult decisions, you will always know that the right thing to do&#8230;is the right thing to do.\u00a0 Do it.\u00a0 Listen to yourself and be guided by what you believe is right.<\/p>\n<p>Standing against the crowd and choosing the harder right instead of the easier wrong, as the Cadet Prayer prescribes, can be very lonely and frightening at times.\u00a0 And it requires immense moral courage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is an interesting position to assert that every officer <em>knows<\/em> the right thing to do &#8212; meaning many in the current controversies have been knowingly <em>choosing<\/em> to do the &#8220;wrong thing.&#8221;\u00a0 Of course, the &#8220;moral courage&#8221; to which Secretary Hagel refers presupposes a knowledge of right and wrong; normally, that is defined outside of &#8220;listening to yourself,&#8221; unless one includes a moral and religious upbringing in one&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary Hagel is <!--more-->right: Military members must do the right thing, even if it is the harder course.\u00a0 President Obama made <a href=\"http:\/\/nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2013\/05\/24\/18470149-obama-challenges-naval-academy-graduates-to-help-restore-trust-in-institutions\">similar remarks at Annapolis<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We need your honor&#8230;we need values now more than ever,\u201d he urged them. \u201cEven more than physical courage, we need your moral courage.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But is the military really ready to take the harder course?<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0culture of sexual permissiveness exists\u00a0in the civilian society, and the military is often described as a reflection of the culture from which it is drawn.\u00a0 There are UCMJ rules against some things permitted in civilian life, but they are often not prosecuted unless they are added as a secondary charge to a primary one, or rise to a level that affects &#8220;good order and discipline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those caveats were apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/army-investigating-alaska-officer-for-allegedly-condoning-affairs-1.222698\">repeated by US Army LtCol Joseph Miley<\/a>, a battalion commander who is accused of allowing an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/usnews.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2013\/05\/24\/18477490-open-season-for-sex-at-alaskan-base-military-officials-say\">open season<\/a>&#8221; for sex at his remote base.\u00a0 (The scandal there has apparently been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/article\/20120912\/NEWS\/209120319\/Racy-pin-up-sparks-complaint-investigation\">ongoing for some time<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;easy&#8221; course is to mimic civilian society, one which <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/09\/general-welsh-connects-social-mores-sexual-assault-trends\/\">General Welsh accurately described as a &#8220;hook up&#8221; culture<\/a>.
