{"id":22555,"date":"2013-05-09T02:17:29","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T05:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=22555"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:32:07","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:32:07","slug":"general-welsh-connects-social-mores-sexual-assault-trends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/09\/general-welsh-connects-social-mores-sexual-assault-trends\/","title":{"rendered":"General Welsh Connects Social Mores, Sexual Assault Trends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span><\/em>: USAF Public Affairs took the somewhat unusual step of contributing to the comments sections of a few articles that derided Gen Welsh&#8217;s comments.\u00a0 LtCol John Sheets issued <a href=\"http:\/\/thebea.st\/ZLRKkZ\">the following statement <\/a>on <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sfgate.com\/nov05election\/2013\/05\/08\/dereliction-of-duty-why-wasnt-air-force-honcho-slammed-for-suggesting-hookup-culture-to-blame-for-military-rapes\/?plckFindCommentKey=CommentKey:06ba4f8f-07f8-4ee9-b7f2-1a89d0a89859\">behalf of the CSAF<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III gave the following statement to clarify what he meant in using the phrase &#8216;hook up mentality&#8217; to describe the culture from which the military recruits its people: &#8220;My reference was certainly not blaming the victim; it was based on some young men treating young women with a complete lack of respect. There is no place for sexual<br \/>\nassault in our Air Force and we&#8217;re committed to solving this problem. As I&#8217;ve said to our Airmen many times, you&#8217;re either part of the solution or you&#8217;re part of the problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Lt Col John Sheets, Air Force Public Affairs<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That seems consistent with the fair reading of his original statement (for which the Washington Post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/ruth-marcus-military-leaders-shift-the-blame-on-sexual-assault\/2013\/05\/10\/dedf75cc-b8da-11e2-92f3-f291801936b8_story.html\">provided more context<\/a>).\u00a0 Young men <em>and women <\/em>treat <em>each other <\/em>with a lack of respect in the modern social context of sex.\u00a0 They then bring that into the Air Force, and the Air Force has to deal with it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>On Tuesday General Mark Welsh, Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, appeared to indicate that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-military-sexual-assaults-20130508,0,3779279.story\">moral culture of society was having an impact<\/a> on the culture of the Air Force:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In testimony Tuesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Air Force&#8217;s top commander, Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, appeared to blame broader society, noting that 20% of women report they had been sexually assaulted &#8220;before they came into the military.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So they come in from a society where this occurs,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Some of it is the hookup mentality of junior high even and high school <!--more-->students now, which my children can tell you about from watching their friends and being frustrated by it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Contrary to the framing, he wasn&#8217;t &#8220;blam[ing] broader society,&#8221; nor was he blaming the &#8220;hook-up culture,&#8221; as others sites claimed.\u00a0 It was a simple statement.\u00a0 Society now has lax social mores when it comes to sex; that affects both recruits coming into the service as well as the culture of the service itself, which reflects the greater culture from which it is drawn.\u00a0 The &#8220;problem&#8221; is not unique to the military, nor is the <em>source <\/em>of the problem to be found solely within the military.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, when the military focuses its &#8220;training&#8221; on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afspc.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123279247\">how to correctly ask another person for sex<\/a>, rather than, say, telling people to <em>keep their pants on <\/em>unless they&#8217;re with their husband or wife, it addresses the symptom, rather than the cause.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of moral character may be most evident when society begins to reap the results of a culture in which moral character is no longer encouraged.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update: USAF Public Affairs took the somewhat unusual step of contributing to the comments sections of a few articles that derided Gen Welsh&#8217;s comments.\u00a0 LtCol John Sheets issued the following statement on behalf of the CSAF: Air Force Chief of Staff Gen.
