{"id":223,"date":"2008-08-07T20:30:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-08T00:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=223"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:16:56","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:16:56","slug":"support-for-free-day-away-approved-by-ig","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/07\/support-for-free-day-away-approved-by-ig\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for &#8220;Free Day Away&#8221; Approved by IG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an interesting turn of events, the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) undermined Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AU) in its recent effort to complain about Fort Leonard Wood&#8217;s &#8220;Free Day Away&#8221; (discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=215\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In July, the AU <a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.org\/site\/News2?abbr=pr&amp;page=NewsArticle&amp;id=9965&amp;security=1002&amp;news_iv_ctrl=1241\">requested<\/a> an IG investigation&#8230;something the MAAF did two years ago.\u00a0 The MAAF also complained again last January, and received a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/tradoc.pdf\">reply<\/a> (which noted that the IG had already investigated their complaint) at nearly the same time the AU made their IG request.\u00a0 From the DOD reply:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The [IG] found that the program does not violate Army policy in that participation is voluntary&#8230;The IG determined that&#8230;soldiers have opportunities to participate in non-religious morale, welfare, and recreation programs.\u00a0 More specifically, during the Free Day Away program,&#8230;soldiers can remain in the barracks or go to an on-post facility, such as a Post Exchange Annex.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Free Day Away event has also featured prominently in the MRFF lawsuit against the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an interesting turn of events, the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) undermined Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AU) in its recent effort to complain about Fort Leonard Wood&#8217;s &#8220;Free Day Away&#8221; (discussed here).
