{"id":22232,"date":"2013-04-25T01:13:07","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T04:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=22232"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:36:50","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:36:50","slug":"southern-baptist-website-blocked-on-military-computers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/25\/southern-baptist-website-blocked-on-military-computers\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Baptist Website Blocked on Military Computers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span>: The DoD says the SBC website was blocked because malware was detected, but that connection from military servers <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/pentagon-to-unblock-baptist-website.html\">would be restored &#8220;today.&#8221;<\/a> The Southern Baptist Convention weighed in, with a caution <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpnews.net\/bpnews.asp?id=40148\">not to rush to judgment<\/a>.\u00a0 Also at the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/article\/20130425\/NEWS\/304250025\">Air Force Times,<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/u-s-military-blocked-some-soldiers-from-accessing-so-baptist-website-over-hostile-content-94750\/\">Christian Post<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpnews.net\/bpnews.asp?id=40162\">Baptist Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>FoxNews reports that the Southern Baptist Convention website was <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/military-blocks-access-to-southern-baptist-website.html\">blocked on military servers<\/a> &#8212; and the military confirmed it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Dept. of Defense confirmed to Fox News late Wednesday that the SBC website had been blocked \u2014 but not intentionally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Defense is not intentionally blocking access to this site, said Lt. Col. Damien Pickart. \u201cWe are working diligently to investigate what might be causing access issues for some of our service members and to correct the situation as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Part of the reason the situation requires &#8220;correction&#8221; is that certain servicemembers need access to the site as part of their function: namely, the many SBC chaplains in the military:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s a concern for the Dept. of Defense to block the website of one of the major evangelical denominations in the country,\u201d Crews told Fox News. \u201cThe Southern Baptist Convention has the largest number of chaplains in the military representing Southern Baptist soldiers and churches. Those chaplains need access to their denomination\u2019s website.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As noted <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/07\/homosexual-websites-claim-military-censorship\/\">the last time the issue of military internet access came up<\/a>, it&#8217;s not as simple as &#8220;the government is censoring\/blocking\/etc&#8221; or being hostile toward <!--more-->the internet site in question.\u00a0 Much of the process is automated, and everyone knows how well software works.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the process can be influenced by those with intent.\u00a0 As noted previously, a Michael Weinstein MRFF acolyte and active duty\u00a0Air Force atheist <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/05\/air-force-atheists-report-christianfighterpilot-com-as-hate-speech\/\">reported ChristianFighterPilot.com as &#8220;hate speech&#8221;<\/a> to try to get it blocked on his base&#8217;s computers (because &#8220;he&#8217;s not my favorite guy&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>A variety of faith leaders decried the web block, including the American Family Association, Chaplain Alliance, the SBC&#8217;s own Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and the Family Research Council.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most interesting is that reports of &#8220;hostility&#8221; (real or imagined) toward Christians in the US military have captivated the news for the past few weeks.\u00a0 The public campaign has deflated Michael Weinstein&#8217;s sails, as he relies on the news to report his accusations that the US military is coercively <em>promoting <\/em>Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the DoD responded strongly, saying not only was it unintentional, it viewed it as a serious misstep:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Pickart told Fox News the Dept. of Defense \u201cstrongly supports the rights of service members, to include their ability to access religious websites like that of the SBC.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Access to religious websites is viewed as a &#8220;right of servicemembers.&#8221;\u00a0 May want to make a note of that one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"smallfont\">Also at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/military-blocks-access-to-southern-baptist-convention-website-94745\/\">Christian Post<\/a> and the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/us\/southern-baptist-site-blocked-on-military-bases-1.218273\">Stars and Stripes<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update: The DoD says the SBC website was blocked because malware was detected, but that connection from military servers would be restored &#8220;today.&#8221; The Southern Baptist Convention weighed in, with a caution not to rush to judgment.\u00a0 Also at the Air Force Times, Christian Post, and Baptist Press.
