In reference to implications the Republican Party might move to recognize homosexual “marriage,” former Governor and Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee noted<\/a> that the party would get a lot smaller, because “evangelicals will take a walk.”\u00a0 The reason, he explained, is that Christians believe in an unchanging, objective standard:<\/p>\n

If we have subjective standards, that means that we\u2019re willing to move our standards based on the prevailing whims of culture. Politicians have an obligation to be thermostats, not just thermometers. They\u2019re not simply to reflect the temperature of the room, or the culture, as it were. They\u2019re to set the standards for law, for what\u2019s right, for what\u2019s wrong, understanding that not everybody\u2019s going to agree with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn this issue, I recognize the culture is moving away from the traditional standard, but it\u2019s almost like saying, well, we have a basketball team and nobody on the team can hit the goal that\u2019s 10 feet off the floor so we\u2019re going to lower the goal down to six feet and that way everybody can slam dunk the ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the question is, have you have improved your basketball game? Or have you actually just changed the standard so it looks like you\u2019re doing better?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While some seem to be trying to say religions (Christianity, more specifically) and those with conservative moral values<\/a> are suddenly trying to deny others their civil rights<\/a>, Huckabee notes it is \u00a0society <\/em>that <\/em>is changing, not persons of faith.<\/p>\n

What’s “new” isn’t the religious opposition to homosexuality; its the brazen demands by some that society not only accept but protect <\/em>and find virtuous <\/em>that which has been counter to religious faiths for millennia.<\/p>\n

In an interesting turn, RNC Chair Reince Priebus said Huckabee was a “model” for the party<\/a> on dealing with the issues of abortion and homosexuality.<\/p>\n
