{"id":21374,"date":"2013-02-07T02:11:14","date_gmt":"2013-02-07T05:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=21374"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:52:56","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:52:56","slug":"us-military-expected-to-expand-homosexual-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/07\/us-military-expected-to-expand-homosexual-access\/","title":{"rendered":"US Military Expected to Expand Homosexual Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple news sites <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2013\/02\/06\/pentagon-extending-benefits-for-gays.html\">reported the &#8216;leak&#8217;<\/a> that the Pentagon was preparing to expand the list of military benefits available to homosexuals.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has not made a final decision on which benefits will be included, the officials said, but the Pentagon is likely to allow same-sex partners to have access to the on-base commissary and other military subsidized stores, as well as some health and welfare programs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2013\/02\/military-same-sex-couples-benefits-extended-020513\/\">Competing articles<\/a> offered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/pentagon-to-extend-certain-benefits-to-same-sex-spouses\/2013\/02\/05\/3f68a638-6fc6-11e2-ac36-3d8d9dcaa2e2_story.html\">differing lists<\/a> of benefits expected to be extended (and refused).\u00a0 Apparently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/02\/05\/us\/pentagon-same-sex-benefits\/index.html\">&#8220;gay activists&#8221; were leaked<\/a> differing information.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary Panetta&#8217;s proposed replacement, former Senator Chuck Hagel, has indicated he similarly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/guest-voices\/post\/can-chuck-hagel-make-gay-equality-a-reality-in-the-military\/2013\/01\/29\/bbd0fe2a-6a56-11e2-af53-7b2b2a7510a8_blog.html\">supports the extension of benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some articles noted that there is a &#8220;fine legal line&#8221; to walk, since the <!--more-->federal government is prohibited from recognizing homosexuals as &#8220;married&#8221; &#8212; and thus granting them the benefits due only to those who are married.<\/p>\n<p>How the military will walk that line will be interesting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Officials said the military likely will require that some type of document be signed to designate the military member&#8217;s partner as a legitimate recipient of the benefits. The same-sex partners are also expected to be issued some type of identification card that would give them access to the military installations and programs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A problem may arise if the DoD opens up this &#8220;access&#8221; only to those who are homosexual &#8212; as it would be granting special privileges to an unrecognized class.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, it could be a potential logistical (and security) nightmare if the military grants any Tom, Dick, or Harry the right to carry an ID card and gain access to base privileges &#8212; merely because someone signs a sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>The desire to avoid those issues is precisely why the military has a distinct requirement before granting such benefits:\u00a0 A military member has to be <em>married<\/em>.\u00a0 While it may seem &#8220;unfair&#8221; to fianc\u00e9s, &#8220;serious&#8221; girlfriends, and those in polygamous, incestuous, illicit, or otherwise &#8220;unrecognized&#8221; relationships, the military has to draw the line <em>somewhere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>How the military can move that line &#8212; and simultaneously avoid both recognizing homosexual marriages and opening the floodgates &#8212; remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-share=\"true\" data-show-faces=\"true\" data-size=\"small\" data-action=\"like\" data-layout=\"standard\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><strong>ADVERTISEMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><!-- blogpost --><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"2728423835\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6450825356098669\"><\/ins><script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple news sites reported the &#8216;leak&#8217; that the Pentagon was preparing to expand the list of military benefits available to homosexuals.
