{"id":21251,"date":"2013-02-08T02:01:27","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T05:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=21251"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:52:45","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:52:45","slug":"article-calls-on-us-military-to-repeal-ban-on-sikhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/08\/article-calls-on-us-military-to-repeal-ban-on-sikhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Article Calls on US Military to Repeal Ban on Sikhs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Simran Jeet Singh, a doctoral student at Columbia University, wrote a Huffington Post blog entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/simran-jeet-singh\/repealing-the-ban-against-sikhs-in-the-military_b_2525366.html\">Repealing the Ban Against Sikhs in the Military<\/a>:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez from the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice&#8230;repeated a constant refrain he has heard from the Sikhs in Oak Creek: &#8220;We love this country and want to show our love for it. But we still aren&#8217;t allowed to serve in the military.&#8221; The Assistant Attorney General then said he would elevate the Sikh desire to serve in the military to the highest levels of the Obama Administration.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article is interesting in touching on a subject not often discussed, but it also reflects that lack of consideration.\u00a0 For example, as commenters on the article noted, it was sensationally titled:\u00a0 There <em>is no ban <\/em>on Sikhs &#8212; or any other religious person &#8212; serving <!--more-->in the United States military.\u00a0 (But if you want to draw attention to your cause, it is popular to claim a &#8220;ban&#8221; that needs &#8220;repealed.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>There <em>is <\/em>the requirement that members of the military adhere to a consistent standard of military uniforms &#8212; meaning, generally, no public displays of religious modifications to the uniform.\u00a0 The US Supreme Court has previously upheld the ability of the US military to restrict troops&#8217; uniforms, even if that interferes with troops&#8217; religious freedoms (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/religionandmilitary.htm#scotus\">Goldman v.
