{"id":21197,"date":"2013-01-25T02:33:24","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T05:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=21197"},"modified":"2016-11-26T01:56:31","modified_gmt":"2016-11-26T04:56:31","slug":"crusader-crosses-removed-from-us-afghan-chapel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/25\/crusader-crosses-removed-from-us-afghan-chapel\/","title":{"rendered":"Crusader Crosses Removed from US Afghan Chapel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NBC reports the US military chapel at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E was improperly displaying Christian crosses, and the Army has <a href=\"http:\/\/worldnews.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2013\/01\/24\/16647516-steeple-cross-at-us-army-base-on-afghan-frontier-raise-hackles\">ordered them removed and covered over<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>U.S. military commanders in Afghanistan on Thursday ordered the removal of a steeple and crucifix erected over a remote American base in the Muslim country after a soldier deployed there noted that the symbols violated Army regulations&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Doors with cross-shaped windows were reportedly boarded up until they can be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>This has <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/24\/us-army-removes-cross-from-afghan-chapel\/\">happened before<\/a>, and, as <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/29\/crosses-removed-from-army-chapel\/\">noted previously<\/a>, it is not really a significant event.\u00a0 The article accurately notes Army regulations (not DoD regulations) dictate <!--more-->Army chapels must be religiously neutral when not being used for religious services.\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing wrong with that, though if someone wanted to change the regulations, there wouldn&#8217;t be anything wrong with that, either &#8212; just as there&#8217;s nothing wrong with the <a href=\"http:\/\/csdailyphoto.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/untitled_21.html\">50-foot tall cross<\/a> at the front of the USAFA cadet chapel.\u00a0 While it does seem that an outside observer was vicariously offended at a Christian symbol, neither its presence nor its removal is a terribly big deal.<\/p>\n<p>To hear a couple of critics, though, you&#8217;d think they just prevented World War III:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When I think of an army sporting a Christian cross, I think Crusades,&#8221; [Sgt. Joel Muhlnickel] wrote in an email from Orgun&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the mere sight of a cross causes someone to &#8220;think Crusades,&#8221; they probably need a little cultural education (and a dose of tolerance).\u00a0 The critics continued, with Weinstein&#8217;s readied alliterative appellations and vitriol:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is the sort of thing that provides a boundless bonanza of terrorist propaganda for the mujahedeen, the insurrectionists, the Taliban and al-Qaida that we are supposedly fighting to protect our national security,&#8221; said Mikey Weinstein&#8230;&#8221;The message of the cross on the chapel is basically putting out the message in Pashto, Dari and Arabic to please blow me up because I&#8217;m a latter day Christian crusader.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Justin Griffith, an Army sergeant at Fort Bragg, N.C., and military director for American Atheists in his personal time [said] &#8220;It&#8217;s intentionally disrespectful to the non-Christians in the U.S. military &#8230; Put it in Afghanistan, the danger is very real, to personnel&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The supposed offense of the terrorists is not only irrelevant, it is <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/12\/osama-bin-laden-confirms-weinsteins-claim\/\">also a fictional narrative<\/a>. The terrorist attacks and threats levied against the United States have not been about American Christianity.
