{"id":20083,"date":"2012-11-14T02:29:19","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T05:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=20083"},"modified":"2012-11-14T02:29:19","modified_gmt":"2012-11-14T05:29:19","slug":"hindu-national-guard-soldier-elected-to-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/14\/hindu-national-guard-soldier-elected-to-congress\/","title":{"rendered":"Hindu National Guard Soldier Elected to Congress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tulsi Gabbard was recently elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat from Hawaii.\u00a0 Gabbard is a Hindu and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnews.com\/politics\/government-and-politics\/hawaii-democrat-poised-to-be-elected-first-hindu-in-congress\">Captain in the Army National Guard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her faith was apparently made an issue during the campaign, at which point she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/combat-vet-tulsi-gabbard-2012-11\">made an interesting reply<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I volunteered to put my life on the line in defense of our country, no one asked me what my religion was.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, when she inprocessed they probably <em>did <\/em>ask <!--more-->her religion, as religious preference is a part of servicemembers&#8217; military records.\u00a0 The point, however, was probably that her service was not contingent upon nor affected by her chosen religion.<\/p>\n<p>The US military is a reflection of the American society from which it is drawn, which includes the cross-section of religious beliefs.\u00a0 The US military not only permits the religious beliefs of its troops, it supports their religious exercise, even as troops are deployed around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Religious freedom is a good thing, and the US military generally does an admirable job of defending it within its ranks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tulsi Gabbard was recently elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat from Hawaii.\u00a0 Gabbard is a Hindu and a Captain in the Army National Guard.
