Supposedly."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A variety of websites are now reporting on the injuries\u00a0US Air Force Academy cadets received during attempts by Four Degrees (freshmen) to drag their Cadet First Sergeants through the first snow of the season.\u00a0 The decades-old tradition is one of many that generally stay out of the public eye, though <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/SwLADrB8Kzs\">YouTube videos<\/a> and the like have revealed them for years.<\/p>\n<p>While there is apparent shock that &#8220;nearly 30 cadets&#8221; were injured in some form (including &#8212; gasp &#8212; <em>bruises<\/em>) during the devolution to a &#8220;brawl,&#8221; that injury count probably doesn&#8217;t crack the records set during <!--more-->other traditions.\u00a0 (One tradition was simply called the &#8220;hall brawl.&#8221;\u00a0 Clear enough?)\u00a0\u00a0One paper made a thinly-veiled attempt to criticize USAFA by calling the tradition\u00a0&#8220;hazing,&#8221; in an apparent effort to\u00a0connect the event to the politically sensitive issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/24\/hazing-and-the-us-military\/\">hazing in the military<\/a>\u00a0that is now officially <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/17\/af-publishes-new-reg-on-religion-social-media-house-cleaning\/\">banned by AFI 1-1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While most official responses disavowed the tradition and scolded the cadets, the USAFA commandant had an interesting response.\u00a0 In essence, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2012\/10\/air-force-23-cadets-injured-academy-brawl-103112w\/\">it might be a teachable moment<\/a> &#8212; that doesn&#8217;t have to end the tradition:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In [an email from General Born], Born indicated that while [Commandant of Cadets BrigGen Greg Lengyel] found the brawl unacceptable, he might be amenable to allowing cadets to keep some version of the tradition if they presented him a proposal for how it could be executed with \u201cgood order and discipline and proper risk management.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One cadet was reportedly treated for a human bite mark.\u00a0 Does that require a rabies shot?<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2012\/10\/air-force-23-cadets-injured-academy-brawl-103112w\/\">comments on the <em>Air Force Times <\/em>article<\/a> are classic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A variety of websites are now reporting on the injuries\u00a0US Air Force Academy cadets received during attempts by Four Degrees (freshmen) to drag their Cadet First Sergeants through the first snow of the season.\u00a0 The decades-old tradition is one of many that generally stay out of the public eye, though YouTube videos and the like have revealed them for years.
