{"id":1991,"date":"2009-11-25T00:30:42","date_gmt":"2009-11-25T08:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=1991"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:16:27","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:16:27","slug":"weinstein-and-the-court-martial-of-maj-nidal-hasan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/25\/weinstein-and-the-court-martial-of-maj-nidal-hasan\/","title":{"rendered":"Weinstein and the Court Martial of Maj Nidal Hasan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Weinstein and his Military Religious Freedom Foundation have been repeatedly <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/11\/weinstein-emphasizes-proselytization-factor-in-massacre\/\">called out<\/a> over the past few weeks for displaying an odious double standard:\u00a0 Weinstein has demanded various military Christians be court-martialed, accusing them of using their positions of power to proselytize and coercing subordinates based on their religion.\u00a0 He has failed to make any similar call against accused Fort Hood gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, even though Hasan has been accused of doing <em>exactly the same things<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Michael Weinstein has finally asked, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/newsweek.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/guestvoices\/2009\/11\/should_hasan_be_court-martialed.html\">Should Hasan be court-martialed?<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 Oddly, he never answers his own question.<\/p>\n<p>To his credit, Weinstein does make a (qualified) statement that Hasan should <em>have been<\/em> court-martialed.\u00a0 That would be the most serious, if parsed,\u00a0statement\u00a0Weinstein has made\u00a0against a person not of the Christian faith in the military.\u00a0 However, <!--more-->Weinstein&#8217;s credit is subsequently diminished when the &#8220;charges&#8221; he levels against Hasan are not the standard MRFF invective:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If it is proven true that Hasan was advocating for Muslims to be excused from combat operations and other U.S. military service, then he should have been aggressively and immediately court-martialed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, Hasan&#8217;s alleged desire\u00a0was that Muslims be excused from combat <em>against other Muslims<\/em>.\u00a0 While misguided and wrong on many levels, such a request would hardly be grounds for court-martial; in fact, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no<\/span> mere <em>belief<\/em> is grounds for court-martial. (One would think the founder of a\u00a0&#8220;religious freedom&#8221; organization would <em>oppose<\/em>, not promote, prosecution for a belief.)<\/p>\n<p>Hasan&#8217;s request\u00a0would more likely take the form of an unsuccessful application\u00a0for Conscientious Objector status;\u00a0no reasonable person would demand such a request should have a punitive result.\u00a0 Other military members have objected to the ongoing wars&#8211;including two at Fort Hood, one for religious reasons&#8211;but they were not court-martialed for their <em>beliefs<\/em>&#8211;they were <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/21\/soldiers-court-martialed-for-refusing-deployment\/\">court-martialed for their <em>actions<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(This also appears to be the first time Weinstein has said someone should have been court-martialed <em>if the allegations were true<\/em>.\u00a0 In other circumstances with Christians, he has simply assumed that they <em>were<\/em>.)\u00a0 Unlike his treatement of Christians, Weinstein\u00a0didn&#8217;t accuse Hasan of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pjvoice.com\/v32\/32300words.aspx\">spiritual rape<\/a>&#8221; of his medical patients, nor did\u00a0he did\u00a0call Hasan&#8217;s actions &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/pubrecord.org\/religion\/837\/military-deeply-involved-in-christian-reality-television-show\/\">treason<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Again, Hasan has been accused of <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/09\/harassment-christianity-blamed-for-fort-hood-shooting\/\">proselytizing his\u00a0patients<\/a> from his position as a medical provider and belittling their addictions as &#8220;unholy.&#8221;\u00a0 About these accusations, which would normally earn MRFF vitriol, Weinstein says&#8230;nothing.<\/p>\n<p>While it initially appeared the MRFF would equally apply its principles, regardless of religious belief,\u00a0Weinstein ultimately passed on the opportunity\u00a0to make the same accusations against a Muslim that he has against Christians.<\/p>\n<p>One internet commenter may have found the explanation.\u00a0 In a spirited defense of the MRFF, they said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Weinstein] and the MRFF foundation [<em>sic<\/em>] are morally and ethically consistent in their defense of all who are persecuted in the US military <em>for being a member of a religious minority<\/em>.\u00a0 (emphasis added)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since Christians are not a minority religion, that may explain Weinstein&#8217;s reluctance to defend the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/20\/mrff-chaplains-sermons-permissible-sort-of\/\">religious freedom of US soldiers with a Christian faith<\/a>.\u00a0 It may also explain Weinstein&#8217;s treatment of Christianity as a bogeyman.<\/p>\n<p>True to that form,\u00a0Weinstein <em>still<\/em> managed to identify the &#8220;true&#8221; culprit in the Fort Hood massacre:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is quite possible that our military personnel did not see the inherent conflict and breach of duty in Hasan&#8217;s alleged overtly religious words and actions <em>because&#8230;fundamentalist Christian military and civilian officials and organizations&#8230;boundlessly proselytize on armed forces installations around the world<\/em>, [making] this extremely intolerant version of Christian religious observance an inherent requirement for the well being and advancement of subordinate military personnel.
