{"id":19732,"date":"2012-10-05T01:57:46","date_gmt":"2012-10-05T04:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=19732"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:12:59","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:12:59","slug":"jason-torpy-praises-criticizes-militarys-support-for-atheists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/05\/jason-torpy-praises-criticizes-militarys-support-for-atheists\/","title":{"rendered":"Jason Torpy Praises, Criticizes Military&#8217;s Support for Atheists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/19\/american-humanist-association-president-to-speak-at-fort-bragg\/#comment-128104\">Chris Rodda&#8217;s claim<\/a> that highlighting the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/19\/american-humanist-association-president-to-speak-at-fort-bragg\/\">US military&#8217;s support for all of its troops<\/a> &#8212; including atheists &#8212; is somehow bad, Jason Torpy of the one-man Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers recently <a href=\"http:\/\/militaryatheists.org\/news\/2012\/09\/humanists-host-speaker-at-ft-bragg-chaplain-facility\/\">praised Fort Bragg<\/a> for doing just that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ft Bragg chaplains showed openness to nontheists in allowing the [Niose] event at Watters Family Life Center on Ft Bragg. This is a positive step forward, showing openness from the chaplaincy and community-building by the local humanist community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While it undermines the MRFF narrative that the US military is a coercive Christian complex, it remains true that the military supports <em>all <\/em>of its servicemembers, without regard to religious belief, to the extent the mission and resources allow.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Torpy went beyond that topic and attempted <!--more-->to make unrelated connections:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Soldiers have been denied the opportunity to simply identify officially as humanist. In addition, requests to volunteer as an Army DFGL (lay leader) have been obstructed for over a year &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first statement is patently untrue.\u00a0 The US military does not prevent anyone from identifying themselves as anything (with the notable exception of banned hate groups).\u00a0 What Torpy <em>meant <\/em>was identifying their <em>religion<\/em> as &#8220;humanism&#8221; within their official records.\u00a0 He&#8217;s probably referring to some <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/17\/army-major-wants-humanism-as-religious-option\/\">previously discussed stories<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>US Army Major Ray Bradley wants military records to be altered so he can express his religion as \u201chumanist,\u201d which is not currently an option.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This philosophy started a heated debate <em>among atheists <\/em>about whether atheists\/humanists should be categorized as a religion.\u00a0 If &#8220;the atheists&#8221; (an undefinable &#8220;group&#8221; in itself) can&#8217;t agree among <em>themselves <\/em>about their <em>self<\/em>-identity, how can the US government be expected to treat them uniformly?<\/p>\n<p>The DFGL discussion has already been covered.\u00a0 More relevant is Torpy&#8217;s phrasing:\u00a0 To say they are &#8220;obstructed&#8221; insinuates atheists are <em>entitled <\/em>to representation within the chaplaincy &#8212; but they&#8217;re not.\u00a0 They have asked for a &#8220;faith leader&#8221; to be recognized within the parameters of the chaplaincy, and, to this point, they&#8217;ve been denied.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s ultimately little different than the chess club making the same request.\u00a0 They may have strong ideological views; they may want to gather and fellowship together; they may want access to chaplaincy-based resources.\u00a0 But they all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapnet.army.mil\/\">get the same answer<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The U.S. Army Chaplaincy provides religious support to America&#8217;s Army while assisting commanders in ensuring the right of free exercise of religion for all Soldiers.
