{"id":19524,"date":"2012-09-13T01:29:54","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T04:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=19524"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:13:01","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:13:01","slug":"us-military-attempted-to-influence-pastor-over-anti-islam-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/13\/us-military-attempted-to-influence-pastor-over-anti-islam-film\/","title":{"rendered":"US Military Attempted to Influence Pastor over anti-Islam Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Update<\/strong><\/em><\/span>: Terry Jones has indicated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/worldtoday\/content\/2012\/s3589286.htm\">his response to\u00a0General Dempsey<\/a> was to ask, &#8220;How long do we appease Islam?\u00a0 How far do we back down?&#8221;\u00a0 He also said he is considering not showing the film, as the public reaction has demonstrated that Islam is &#8220;not a religion of peace.\u00a0 It is a very dangerous religion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>By now, most are probably aware of the murders of American embassy officials and the anti-Islam movie (as well as possible al Qaeda links) that is associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/\/news\/newsarticle.aspx?id=117837\">Pentagon announced<\/a> that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2012\/09\/12\/joint-chiefs-chairman-urges-pastor-to-withdraw-support-anti-islam-film\/\">called Pastor Terry Jones<\/a> (of Koran-burning infamy), who had supported the film, to &#8220;express his concerns:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the brief call, Gen Dempsey expressed his concerns over the nature of the film, the tensions it will inflame and the violence it will cause. He asked Mr. Jones to consider withdrawing his support for the film,&#8221; Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, General Dempsey <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/09\/12\/usa-libya-pastor-military-idINL1E8KCF1J20120912\">told Jones the film was &#8220;pornographic,&#8221;<\/a> which is causing Jones to re-evaluate his support for it &#8212; meaning he apparently endorsed a film he hasn&#8217;t seen.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, US military leadership has <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/did-military-try-to-censor-pastors-speech.html\">received scathing criticism<\/a> for its decision to engage an American civilian over an issue of American liberties:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some First Amendment experts believe the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff crossed a line by asking a Florida pastor to withdraw his support for an anti-Islam film&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/firstamendment.jou.ufl.edu\/director\/\">Clay Calvert<\/a> is director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/firstamendment.jou.ufl.edu\/\">Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project<\/a>, which is a non-partisan\u00a0program of the University of Florida.\u00a0 He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The fact that a very, very powerful government official is reaching down to a pastor in Florida asking him to censor his own speech \u2013 in the greater good \u2013 supposedly preventing further violence upon American officials abroad&#8221; is an issue&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Liberty Institute&#8217;s Hiram Sasser said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here we have the third most powerful person in the Armed Forces calling a citizen and asking them to take an action in regards to squelching their free speech&#8230;That\u2019s pretty drastic and extreme. I would interpret that as something more than a \u2018polite ask from my neighbor.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not the first time the US military has &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/04\/us-military-condemns-koran-burning-defends-muslim-faith\/\">condemned<\/a>&#8221; private\u00a0American citizens acting within their legal and Constitutionally-protected liberties.\u00a0 While there is certainly some <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/08\/general-petraeus-condemns-proposed-koran-burning\/\">legitimate military concern<\/a> over the topic, the critics question\u00a0whether the US military should be engaging private citizens\u00a0exercising their protected liberties &#8212; merely because religiously-motivated adversaries might be offended.<\/p>\n<p>After all, has the US military ever considered banning Jews or homosexuals from military service simply because religious extremists use those groups as proof of the evils of the Western world? Has a member of the US military leadership condemned or\u00a0called <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.businessinsider.com\/2011-04-10\/entertainment\/30077095_1_bill-maher-koran-religion\">Bill Maher<\/a> or the writers of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/23\/arts\/television\/23park.html?_r=0\">South Park<\/a><\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was <a href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2012\/09\/12\/reaction-to-anti-islam-film-fuels-debate-on-free-speech-versus-hate-speech\/\">one of the few who highlighted<\/a> what has often <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/07\/defending-freedom-around-the-world-except-religious-freedom\/\">been said\u00a0here<\/a>:\u00a0 America&#8217;s response to others&#8217; offense can be a <em>teaching moment <\/em>in which the US explains and demonstrates the value of <em>freedom<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gingrich&#8230;said that after the attacks, \u201cWe had an opportunity to stand up and say, \u2018You know, it is true &#8211; some people in the United States might make a film that is totally whacked out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSooner or later, we in the modern world have to say to those who are living in a different way, \u2018Look, we stand for freedom,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This teaching moment has apparently been lost, as even <em>al Arabiya <\/em>is carrying the story of the US military&#8217;s attempt to <a href=\"http:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/articles\/2012\/09\/12\/237652.html\">influence an American pastor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not to fear, surely the vocal critics of US military leaders using their positions of authority to influence individual&#8217;s religious freedom will be consistent and defend the right of Jones to partake in his speech.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, one group &#8212; atheists &#8212; <em>have<\/em> come out in a virtual defense of Jones &#8212; even if somewhat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/friendlyatheist\/2012\/09\/11\/in-response-to-muslim-rioters-u-s-embassy-apologizes-for-offensive-speech\/\">reluctantly<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/atheists.org\/us-consulate-libya-and-embassy-egypt-attacked-because-video-muslim-mobs-consider-blasphemous\">implicitly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, religious freedom critic Michael Weinstein went full tinfoil hat, excoriating the film and citing implications the movie (produced by a self-described <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/2012\/09\/12\/filmmaker-sam-bacile-in-hiding-after-anti-muslim-film-sparks-violence-in-which\/\">Israeli Jew in California<\/a>)\u00a0was <em>really<\/em> made by secretive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/speakeasy\/michaelweinstein\/values-voter-summit-train-wrecks-and-frankensteins-monsters?page=0%2C1\">Christians trying to start a world war<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The film is a mocking and inciting depiction of the life of the Prophet Mohammad that torturously, deceptively, and ignominiously attempts to tie the origins of Islam to themes of homosexuality and pedophilia, and a call to arms for Christian-Zionist proponents of an apocalyptic \u201cClash of Civilizations.\u201d Some have even suggested\u00a0 that the film was produced by a shady circle of exclusively evangelical Christians, hell-bent on intentionally feeding the flames of sectarian madness in the region.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Weinstein also calls the film &#8220;hate speech,&#8221; while ignoring the fact he has frequently criticized Christianity in a &#8220;mocking and inciting&#8221; fashion.\u00a0 But so long as its Christianity\u00a0&#8212; and not Islam &#8212; such vitriol is apparently acceptable to Weinstein.)\u00a0\u00a0Weinstein then uses his normal hyperbolic language to claim this, like virtually everything else with which he disagrees, is a &#8220;national security threat:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We at MRFF absolutely condemn this provocation by Bacile and Jones&#8230; All Americans should condemn the fully-fledged national security threat that this vile strain of Islamophobic stupidity represents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But listen carefully to <em>why<\/em> Weinstein feels that way [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Radical, fundamentalist Islam is a clear and present danger that must be fought and defeated in the name of basic human rights. However, <strong><em>its adherents are a distinct minority <\/em><\/strong>within the broader mosaic that constitutes Islam.
