{"id":19453,"date":"2012-09-14T00:56:20","date_gmt":"2012-09-14T03:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=19453"},"modified":"2012-09-14T00:56:20","modified_gmt":"2012-09-14T03:56:20","slug":"panetta-talks-suicide-prevention-mental-fitness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/14\/panetta-talks-suicide-prevention-mental-fitness\/","title":{"rendered":"Panetta Talks Suicide Prevention, Mental Fitness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta\u00a0addressed the DOD and Department of Veterans Affairs Annual Suicide Prevention Conference (in June, though recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dodlive.mil\/index.php\/2012\/09\/panetta-outlines-suicide-prevention-strategy\/\">re-posted here<\/a>), describing to the audience his four-point vision for the DoD to become a &#8220;game-changing innovator in the field of suicide prevention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Panetta&#8217;s vision includes vigilance on the part of leaders, improving behavioral healthcare, elevation of &#8220;mental fitness,&#8221; and increased research on suicide.<\/p>\n<p>What was potentially most notable was what the Secretary <em>didn&#8217;t <\/em>say:\u00a0 He never mentioned Chaplains, religion, faith, or &#8220;spiritual fitness,&#8221; despite <!--more-->the historical understanding (continuing today) that a person&#8217;s spiritual fortitude plays a strong role in his resilience.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, this is what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/speeches\/speech.aspx?speechid=1686\">he <em>did<\/em> say<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A third pillar of suicide prevention is better equipping service members with training and coping skills that they need to avoid or bounce back from stress&#8230;We\u2019ve got to elevate mental fitness to the same level of importance that DoD has always placed on physical fitness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Remember the US Army&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/10\/army-initiates-comprehensive-soldier-fitness-program\/\">Comprehensive Soldier Fitness<\/a>?&#8221;\u00a0 It covered 5 categories:\u00a0 Physical, Emotional, Social, Family, and Spiritual.\u00a0 &#8220;Mental&#8221; fitness was not among them.\u00a0 &#8220;Spiritual fitness,&#8221; however, <a href=\"http:\/\/csf.army.mil\/\">was described as<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One\u2019s purpose, core values, beliefs, identity, and life vision.
