A former US Marine accused of wringing a kitten’s neck<\/a> received 30 days in jail from a civil circuit judge:<\/p>\n

Circuit Judge Thomas Forehand…found Angelo Michael Stango, 27, guilty Friday of misdemeanor animal cruelty and sentenced him to a year with 11 months suspended.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Violence against the cute and cuddly is punishable (though, oddly enough, there was apparently no body to prove the cat was actually dead<\/em>).\u00a0 There will certainly be some who claim the former Marine Sergeant should have received a harsher punishment.<\/p>\n

As an interesting comparison, the US military has apparently chosen not<\/em> to charge US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan with killing the unborn child of one of his (alleged) victims<\/a>, US Army Pvt Francheska Velez.\u00a0 Stango’s kitten killing was tried\u00a0in civil court<\/a> —\u00a0notably, there is no UCMJ article specifically addressing animal cruelty.<\/p>\n

There is <\/em>a UCMJ article specifically addressing killing an unborn child:\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Article 119a\u2014Death or injury of an unborn child<\/strong>
\nAny person [who] causes the death of, or bodily injury…to, a child, who is in utero at the time the conduct takes place, is guilty of a separate offense under this section and shall, upon conviction, be punished by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct, which shall be consistent with the punishments prescribed by the President for that conduct had that injury or death occurred to the unborn child\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n

…the term \u201cunborn child\u201d means a child in utero…at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
