{"id":18665,"date":"2012-07-23T00:44:20","date_gmt":"2012-07-23T03:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=18665"},"modified":"2013-11-01T23:26:13","modified_gmt":"2013-11-02T02:26:13","slug":"chaplain-who-watched-homosexual-ceremony-leaves-baptists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/23\/chaplain-who-watched-homosexual-ceremony-leaves-baptists\/","title":{"rendered":"Chaplain who Watched Homosexual Ceremony Leaves Baptists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chaplain (Col) Timothy Wagoner made headlines when he <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/06\/chaplains-report-on-turmoil-or-lack-thereof-post-dadt-repeal\/\">&#8220;supportively&#8221; attended<\/a> a homosexual &#8220;commitment ceremony&#8221; at McGuire AFB.\u00a0 He made headlines again when his endorsing agency <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/16\/military-homosexual-ceremony-prompts-chaplain-clarification\/\">publicly clarified<\/a> that they continued to oppose homosexuality and semblances of homosexual &#8220;unions.&#8221;\u00a0 For his part, Chaplain Wagoner noted he was quoted out of context and in such a way as to imply he &#8220;condoned&#8221; the ceremony, when in fact he did not.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Chaplain Wagoner has informed his endorsing agency that he is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bpnews.net\/bpnews.asp?id=38317\">leaving the Southern Baptist Convention<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If an SBC chaplain concludes he cannot conduct his ministry <!--more-->in harmony with SBC beliefs and doctrine, then it is best to part ways,&#8221; Ezell said.<\/p>\n<p>Wagoner notified NAMB of his decision July 19.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article accurately notes military chaplains require an ecclesiastical endorsement; the loss of an endorsement results in processing for discharge from the military.\u00a0 In fact, that&#8217;s precisely how the Navy discharged <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/10\/former-navy-chaplain-klingenschmitt-sues-for-reinstatement\/\">Chaplain (Lt) Gordon Klingenschmitt<\/a> a few years ago.\u00a0 He had switched endorsers, and the military refused to process the new endorsing agency.<\/p>\n<p>Given the sensitivity of the subject, it is likely Chaplain Wagoner will easily find a new endorsing agency if he wants one; and it is likely the military will accept it.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the Forum on the Military Chaplaincy &#8212; a group that worked for repeal of DADT &#8212; had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abpnews.com\/culture\/social-issues\/item\/7614-group-protests-chaplain%E2%80%99s-rebuke\">criticized the Baptist response<\/a>, claiming the SBC was &#8220;bullying&#8221; the chaplain for whom they were responsible:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[They] accused the Southern Baptist Convention of bullying and intimidation for asking an Air Force chaplain to explain his presence at the first publicly announced gay civil union&#8230;to take place at an American military installation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Forum went a step further, saying Chaplain Wagoner&#8217;s presence was <em>required<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Col. Paul Dodd, a retired Southern Baptist Army chaplain who co-chairs the Forum on the Military Chaplaincy, said Wagoner should not have to apologize.
