John Fleming, R-La., said in a statement Wednesday that the \u201cmarriage-like\u201d ceremony performed for two women by an Army chaplain shouldn\u2019t have been allowed because Louisiana law doesn\u2019t recognize same-sex marriage or civil union. U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., claims the ceremony violates Defense Department policy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Congressman Todd Akin called it a <a href=\"http:\/\/akin.house.gov\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=1719:akin-statement-on-same-sex-ceremony-on-military-base&amp;catid=32:2012-press-releases&amp;Itemid=88\">clear violation of state law and military policies<\/a>, while the participants (and the chaplain) got around that little problem <!--more-->by <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/26\/usafa-discusses-dadt-repeal-effects\/\">using the technique<\/a> of\u00a0calling it a &#8220;commitment&#8221; type, non-civil ceremony:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Fort Polk spokesman said everyone involved in the \u201csame-gender private religious ceremony\u201d at a base chapel understood it was not a marriage ceremony.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the event was nothing more than\u00a0a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/06\/07\/us\/army-same-sex-ceremony\/\">private religious ceremony<\/a>&#8221; between an enlisted woman and a civilian woman.<\/p>\n<p>Which begs the question why it was performed in the chapel to begin with.\u00a0 By law it could not be a civil ceremony, and homosexual unions are not a part of any mainstream religion.\u00a0 Thus, it is not an issue of religious freedom, though the incident highlights the fact there are US military chaplains who come from theological backgrounds accepting of homosexual conduct.\u00a0 In this case, it was <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/same-sex-ceremony-held-on-military-base.html\">reportedly<\/a> a Disciples of Christ chaplain.<\/p>\n<p>The Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty noted this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancealert.org\/2012\/06\/06\/same-sex-ceremony-in-military-chapel-raises-need-for-congressional-action-chaplain-alliance-for-religious-liberty\/\">carefully crafted\u00a0&#8220;marriage-like ceremony&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0precisely defines the need for the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/18\/white-house-strongly-objects-to-religious-liberty-provisions\/\">laws Congress has already proposed<\/a> as amendments to the 2013 NDAA &#8212; which some previously claimed are unnecessary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A chaplain at Fort Polk, Louisiana, has reportedly conducted a same-sex ceremony within the military chapel despite Louisiana&#8217;s ban on homosexual marriage: U.S. Rep.
