{"id":17631,"date":"2012-05-02T01:30:54","date_gmt":"2012-05-02T04:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=17631"},"modified":"2013-10-06T18:59:26","modified_gmt":"2013-10-06T21:59:26","slug":"military-atheists-harass-families-of-deployed-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/02\/military-atheists-harass-families-of-deployed-soldiers\/","title":{"rendered":"Military Atheists Harass Families of Deployed Soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Justin Griffith, the Army Soldier made famous by the event he organized at Fort Bragg, recently found a prayer group advertised on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/2.508PIR\">Army unit&#8217;s Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0[redacted]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/pir4.jpg\" width=\"430\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Griffith immediately took issue with the time of the prayer event, which is during what are traditionally considered duty hours.\u00a0 He decided to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/freethoughtblogs.com\/rockbeyondbelief\/2012\/05\/01\/army-unit-says-only-religious-troops-get-out-of-work-friday-morning\/\">call on his web followers<\/a> to target the unit&#8217;s Facebook post [formatting original]:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Okay, internet atheists <\/strong>\u2013 this is one of those times where people need you to speak out for them&#8230;If you choose to participate in the conversation, do so with respect. Do not engage in flame wars, and do not attack religious people (and this is not the time to attack their beliefs). We are aiming for equality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please (respectfully!) leave your opinion on the 2-508 PIR Facebook page.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What Griffith failed to grasp was the end of the announcement, which noted the availability of childcare.\u00a0 Why would on-duty Soldiers\u00a0need childcare?<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t.\u00a0 The Soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne, are deployed to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement of a prayer time was for <strong><em>their families<\/em><\/strong>, who are praying for the safety and quick return of their loved ones.\u00a0 (Atheists can&#8217;t allow <em>that<\/em>, now can they?)\u00a0 In fact, the first comment on the post was from the site admin, noting it was a voluntary event for the friends and families of the unit.\u00a0 The 508&#8217;s deployment has not been without incident; it\u00a0has lost Soldiers in just the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>When the interlopers&#8217; comments &#8212; which included vitriolic accusations and sarcastic condescension &#8212; started getting deleted, Griffith took the high road:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They&#8217;re deleting comments. I guess they want &#8216;the hard way&#8217;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When the harassment finally drove the admin to pull down the announcement, Griffith celebrated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That&#8217;s one way to do it. :)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Worse, this is one Fort Bragg soldier going after fellow Fort Bragg soldiers &#8212; and their families.\u00a0 A supporter of the unit responded and criticized Griffith for\u00a0organizing a &#8220;politically motivated&#8221; campaign that was &#8220;harassing in nature&#8221;\u00a0against the deployed soldiers&#8217; families\u00a0[formatting original]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The 2-508 PIR website is an information site for friends and families of 2-508th PIR to share information and opportunities. It is NOT a public forum or an avenue for political expression.
