Again."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span>: Liberty Counsel has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lc.org\/index.cfm?PID=14100&amp;PRID=1185\">agreed to defend<\/a> the town of Woonsocket for free.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>The awkwardly named Freedom From Religion Foundation has apparently demanded that a war memorial in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/atheist-group-wants-memorial-cross-removed-from-ri-fire-station-73874\/\">be removed<\/a> because it has a cross on it.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2012\/04\/25\/atheist-group-wants-cross-from-rhode-island-war-memorial-removed\/\">The memorial<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>was erected nearly a century ago to honor the city&#8217;s war dead, including three brothers killed in World War I.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The town&#8217;s mayor had an interesting response to the call to tear down the 91-year old memorial:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mayor Leo Fontaine told the Woonsocket Call he will not remove the cross &#8220;under any circumstances.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the town is reportedly strapped for cash and may not be able to afford a legal defense.<\/p>\n<p>Atheists and critics of various stripes &#8212; including Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and Jason Torpy &#8212; have <!--more-->called for the removal of crosses around the country.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/01\/memorial-crosses-as-us-military-tradition\/\">These crosses<\/a> are on lone mountains in the California desert, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/16\/camp-pendleton-cross-decision-expected-atheists-threaten-suit\/\">military bases<\/a>, town squares, and Arlington National Cemetery.\u00a0 Yes, atheist and former Army Captain Jason Torpy wants to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/23\/military-atheist-calls-for-removal-of-arlington-cross\/\">yank a cross out of Arlington<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; something even the ACLU won&#8217;t touch.\u00a0 Naturally,\u00a0the presence of a cross establishes a religion and creates a state church, therefore it is unconstitutional.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Somehow it seems a bit of\u00a0a stretch to say that means tear down crosses in front of town fire departments.\u00a0 The US Supreme Court has previously agreed, saying<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The goal of avoiding governmental endorsement does not require eradication of all religious symbols in the public realm&#8230;The Constitution does not oblige government to avoid any public acknowledgment of religion\u2019s role in society&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A Latin cross is not merely a reaffirmation of Christian beliefs. It is a symbol often used to honor and respect those whose heroic acts, noble contributions, and patient striving help secure an honored place in history for this Nation and its people&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/29\/supreme-court-reverses-injunction-against-mojave-cross\/\">from Justice Anthony Kennedy<\/a>, sometimes called the &#8220;swing&#8221; vote on the Court because of his position &#8220;between&#8221; the traditionally conservative and liberal &#8220;blocks.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update: Liberty Counsel has agreed to defend the town of Woonsocket for free.
