{"id":16944,"date":"2012-03-20T00:45:01","date_gmt":"2012-03-20T03:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=16944"},"modified":"2012-03-20T21:56:37","modified_gmt":"2012-03-21T00:56:37","slug":"f-22-pilots-widow-sues-lockheed-boeing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/20\/f-22-pilots-widow-sues-lockheed-boeing\/","title":{"rendered":"F-22 Pilot&#8217;s Widow Sues Lockheed, Boeing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The widow of Capt Jeff Haney, killed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/22\/f-22-pilot-capt-jeffrey-haney-killed-in-crash\/\">November 2010 crash of an F-22<\/a> in Alaska, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2012\/03\/airforce-pilot-widow-sues-raptor-contractors-031612\/\">suing the contractors who built the plane<\/a> &#8212; which includes Lockheed, Boeing, Honeywell, and Pratt &amp; Whitney.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It states that the aircraft was sold with known defective on-board oxygen generating system, bleed air system and other life support systems. \u201cThe life support systems of the F-22 Raptor aircraft were and are completely and wholly inadequate,\u201d the lawsuit states.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the mishap that keeps coming back to the Air Force, the IG recently <!--more-->decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/17\/inspector-general-to-review-alaska-f-22-crash-report\/\">investigate the investigation<\/a> of the accident, and Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz told Congress the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/07\/general-says-air-force-did-not-fault-crash-pilot-despite-report\/\">Air Force did not blame the pilot<\/a> &#8212; which is what most people, including his family, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/20\/air-force-says-f-22-crash-was-pilot-error\/\">got from the report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuits against contractors over military aircraft mishaps are probably a legal spiderweb.\u00a0 While the contractor built the plane, the government accepted it and generally maintains it.\u00a0 There are varying degrees of thought on the &#8220;voluntary&#8221; use of military equipment by servicemembers, and they are trained to use it by the government and ultimately employ the aircraft without regard to the contractor.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2008\/US\/03\/25\/pilot.lawsuit\/index.html\">Maj Stephen Stilwell sued Boeing<\/a> after he was injured when his F-15C Eagle broke apart in midair.\u00a0 Subsequent investigations ultimately grounded the entire fleet of US Air Force F-15Cs.\u00a0 Four years later, it is nearly impossible to tell what became of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grgpc.com\/Wrongful-Death-and-Catastrophic-Injuries\/Military-Air-Crashes.shtml\">that lawsuit<\/a> outside of closed judicial channels.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Boeing&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkland.com\/sitecontent.cfm?contentID=220&amp;itemID=9701\">lawyers claim<\/a> they\u00a0successfully won a dismissal of a <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/30\/marines-boeing-sued-over-2008-hornet-crash\/\">lawsuit filed by Don Yoon and others<\/a>\u00a0when their\u00a0family was killed in a US Marine F\/A-18 crash\u00a0that leveled his home.\u00a0 The lawsuit against the US government <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/13\/goverment-appeals-family-award-in-f-18-crash\/\">is ongoing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At least one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decof.com\/cases.php\">law firm&#8217;s website<\/a> claims a victorious settlement\u00a0in a lawsuit over a US military aircraft&#8217;s faulty ejection resulting in the death of the pilot &#8212; though the details beyond that are &#8220;confidential.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>US military pilots live in a dangerous world, but one that does not need to be made more dangerous through the faults of others. There is no easy answer.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the Air Force reportedly received a <a href=\"http:\/\/defensetech.org\/2012\/03\/15\/air-force-redesigns-f-22-emergency-oxygen-handles\/\">redesigned emergency oxygen handle<\/a> for the F-22 &#8212; the very switch the report said Haney was attempting, unsuccessfully, to activate when he died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"smallfont\">Also noted at the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2012\/03\/ap-f22-fighters-retrofitted-after-alaska-crash-032012w\/\">Air Force Times<\/a> <\/em>and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/air-force\/air-force-to-modify-f-22-oxygen-system-following-fatal-crash-1.172123\">Stars and Stripes<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The widow of Capt Jeff Haney, killed in the November 2010 crash of an F-22 in Alaska, is suing the contractors who built the plane &#8212; which includes Lockheed, Boeing, Honeywell, and Pratt &amp; Whitney.
