{"id":16647,"date":"2012-03-07T00:51:18","date_gmt":"2012-03-07T03:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=16647"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:14:03","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:14:03","slug":"fort-bragg-reminds-rock-beyond-belief-of-appropriate-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/07\/fort-bragg-reminds-rock-beyond-belief-of-appropriate-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Bragg Reminds Rock Beyond Belief of Appropriate Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/30\/fort-bragg-reviewing-atheist-rock-beyond-belief-lineup\/\">the wake<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/25\/fort-bragg-to-host-anti-religion-band-at-atheist-rock-beyond-belief\/\">Aiden scandal<\/a> and questions about their acts&#8217; previous behavior, Fort Bragg has reportedly made sure those behind Rock Beyond Belief are &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2012\/02\/ap-organizers-prepare-atheism-themed-bragg-event-022912\/\">fully aware<\/a>&#8221; of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postcrescent.com\/usatoday\/article\/38691259\">standards they must follow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The reminder comes after the most recent question from an Army chaplain about the event&#8217;s ability to adhere to military guidance:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last month, Chaplain Chuck Williams posted an open letter on Fort Bragg&#8217;s Facebook page saying he&#8217;s concerned that, based on lyrics in some of the performers&#8217; songs, and Dawkins&#8217; often caustic tone when addressing religious believers, the Rock Beyond Belief event will be little more than an occasion to mock soldiers who believe in God.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;They are well known to use such derogatory terms towards or about people of faith as &#8216;moronic,&#8217; &#8216;stupid,&#8217; &#8216;uneducated,&#8217; &#8216;irrational,&#8217; &#8216;childish&#8217; and &#8216;delusional&#8217; in the course of their public speaking engagements and writings,&#8221; Williams wrote of Dawkins and other scheduled speakers. &#8220;If memory serves, nothing of the sort ever happened or was expressed in any way toward those of other faiths or even unbelief in the &#8216;Rock the Fort&#8217; event.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In an interesting phrasing, Fort Bragg responded to the public criticism by engaging in a &#8220;back and forth&#8221; with event organizers, as opposed to simply giving them guidance:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bragg leadership is aware of those concerns, and has talked about them with organizers, according to base spokesman Ben Abel.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;We&#8217;ve had some back and forth to make sure the event organizer and the bands are fully aware of the standards that we expect everybody to follow,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those behind Rock Beyond Belief publicly backed off the &#8220;atheist anthem&#8221; that denigrated religion after multiple media outlets aroused public concern over the atheists treatment of religion.\u00a0 Notably, while they&#8217;ve removed the &#8220;church-burning video&#8221; from their website, the song itself remains the theme-song behind their <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/C6kJ_EwwnD4\">promotional video<\/a> on their <a href=\"http:\/\/rockbeyondbelief.com\/\">redesigned site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, US Army Sgt Justin Griffith, the lead of the event, made an interesting comment about avoiding &#8220;provocative gestures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Griffith also says there won&#8217;t be any provocative gestures like &#8220;de-baptisms,&#8221; during which participants renounce having received the Christian sacrament.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s absolutely just about embracing the community,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re taking the high road here.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you&#8217;ll recall, it was <em>Griffith <\/em>who made a point of <em>emphasizing <\/em>kids would be able to not just &#8220;walk on water&#8221;, courtesy of an atheist summer camp&#8217;s arts and crafts, but also do so <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/30\/fort-bragg-reviewing-atheist-rock-beyond-belief-lineup\/\">in front of the base chapel<\/a>\u00a0[emphasis added]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can let your kid walk on water <strong><em>right in front of the main post Chapel<\/em><\/strong>! <strong><em>Win<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There can be no question the atheist formulation of walking on water is mocking in tone, and it is obviously directed to a singular event in one particular religious faith.\u00a0 Apparently Griffith thinks this\u00a0&#8220;Win&#8221; &#8212; and\u00a0doing so &#8220;right in front of the main post Chapel&#8221; &#8212; is the non-provocative &#8220;high road.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the Aiden scandal and questions about their acts&#8217; previous behavior, Fort Bragg has reportedly made sure those behind Rock Beyond Belief are &#8220;fully aware&#8221; of the standards they must follow.
