{"id":16213,"date":"2012-02-17T00:56:11","date_gmt":"2012-02-17T03:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=16213"},"modified":"2012-02-17T00:56:11","modified_gmt":"2012-02-17T03:56:11","slug":"army-major-wants-humanism-as-religious-option","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/17\/army-major-wants-humanism-as-religious-option\/","title":{"rendered":"Army Major Wants Humanism as Religious Option"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US Army Major Ray Bradley wants military records to be altered so he can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2012\/02\/ap-officer-wants-humanism-officially-recognized-020812\/\">express his religion as &#8220;humanist,&#8221;<\/a> which is not currently an option.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Bradley] can\u2019t be designated as a humanist on his official records or dog tags, although he can be classified as an atheist.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction may not seem like a large one to those unfamiliar with humanism, but the Fort Bragg-based officer says it\u2019s the equivalent of being told that \u201cChristian\u201d is an acceptable designation, but not \u201cCatholic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumanism is a philosophy that guides a person,\u201d Bradley said. \u201cIt\u2019s more than just a stamp of what you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As to the confusion about whether atheists are humanists, or vice versa:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAtheism means just that: you don\u2019t believe in God,\u201d [Howard Katz, president of the Humanist Society] said. \u201cYou could have an axe murderer who\u2019s an atheist. Humanists have ethics and a philosophy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, that cleared that <em>right <\/em>up, didn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Part of Bradley&#8217;s motivation is his apparent attempt to become a part of the Army&#8217;s chaplaincy system as a humanist &#8220;lay leader.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The strange thing is Bradley goes out of his way to emphasize humanism is <em>not <\/em>a religion, yet eschews being associated with atheism; he also\u00a0wants to be classified within the <em>same system <\/em>as a religion.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a discombobulated mess.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the military&#8217;s existing system is fairly simple, and it is supported by the atheists and humanists who simultaneously criticize it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Distinctive Faith Group Leaders&#8221; (DFGLs) and Chaplains, with regard to specific belief sets, are put in place to enable and facilitate the religious free exercise of faith groups.\u00a0 The US Constitution protects the human liberty of religious freedom, preventing the government from restricting it.\u00a0 While the military gets some leeway due to the criticality of its mission, it must still protect religious freedom when it does not hamper the mission.<\/p>\n<p>As an example of the support given to even minority faiths, in the absence of a Jewish chaplain, a Jewish DFGL or &#8220;lay leader&#8221; is the resident go-to person for the resources, requirements, and support for members of that faith, to protect their religious rights.<\/p>\n<p>However, the most public military atheists claim atheism is <em>not <\/em>a religion.\u00a0 Above, Major Bradley says humanism is not a religion.\u00a0\u00a0If they are not religions,\u00a0they are not granted the protections given to religions.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, they are nothing more than philosophical ideologies which the &#8220;adherents&#8221; are free to follow under the guidelines of <em>every other <\/em>non-religious philosophy that exists in the military.<\/p>\n<p>Atheists like to say that atheism is a religion like &#8220;not playing soccer&#8221; is a sport.<\/p>\n<p>Well, atheists and humanists <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/04\/atheist-chaplains-support-and-actual-atheist-goals\/\">asking for a chaplain<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/22\/military-atheists-seek-status-as-lay-faith-group-leaders\/\">DFGL<\/a> is like asking for a &#8220;not playing soccer&#8221; coach.<\/p>\n<p>By their own admission, an atheist no more needs a &#8220;lay leader&#8221; within the chaplaincy than the local chess club or WoW club needs a DFGL.\u00a0 They simply want the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/01\/military-atheists-seek-benefits-of-theists\/\">benefits of theism<\/a> without being theist.<\/p>\n<p>To use their own examples, appointing an atheist chaplain or DFGL under the chaplaincy would be like giving a bicycle&#8230;to a fish.<\/p>\n<p>Atheists, humanists, idealists, modern artists &#8212; The military does not religiously discriminate against any of them.\u00a0 In fact, contrary to melodramatic accusations, the US military routinely protects troops&#8217; freedom to not believe in a god &#8212; and military chaplains, regardless of their faith, are <em>already<\/em> designated by regulation and policy to do so.\u00a0 The US military <em>already<\/em> fulfills the role of protecting religious liberty the atheists\/humanists claim they want.<\/p>\n<p>They remain free to ask for more, of course, but its unlikely most people think\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/12\/liberty-protected-the-non-persecution-of-military-atheists\/\">demanding a Big Mac in the Burger King drive-thru<\/a> puts one&#8217;s position in the best light.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Army Major Ray Bradley wants military records to be altered so he can express his religion as &#8220;humanist,&#8221; which is not currently an option.
