{"id":16191,"date":"2012-02-22T00:30:27","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T03:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=16191"},"modified":"2012-02-21T01:25:46","modified_gmt":"2012-02-21T04:25:46","slug":"chaplain-on-spiritual-resilience-ask-why","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/22\/chaplain-on-spiritual-resilience-ask-why\/","title":{"rendered":"Chaplain on Spiritual Resilience: Ask &#8220;Why?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Air Force Chaplain (Maj) Kent Schmidt has an article on spiritual resilience, part of the four-pillar <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/10\/air-force-comprehensive-airman-fitness\/\">Comprehensive Airman Fitness<\/a>, in which he encourages his readers to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.travis.af.mil\/tafbmediacenter\/pressreleasearchive\/story.asp?id=123289206\">focus on the why<\/a>:&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s all too easy for those of us serving in a high tempo Air Force to get driven and consumed by the &#8220;What?&#8221;&#8230;Getting caught up in the reactive world, some call it the tyranny of the urgent, can cause us to lose sight of the &#8220;Why?&#8221; The &#8220;Why&#8221; becomes subsumed by the &#8220;What.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to encourage you to make it a point to daily, take a deep breath or two, close your door, dim your computer screen and close your eyes and ask yourself &#8220;Why?&#8221; Why am I doing what I&#8217;m doing today? Why am I on this current trajectory?\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The chaplain explains that by focusing on <em>why<\/em>, &#8220;we can move on the more creative &#8220;How?&#8221;&#8221;\u00a0 Rather than being a victim of the tyranny of the urgent, this focus on the why results in a <em>connection <\/em>&#8212; a <em>purpose<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The &#8220;What&#8221; then becomes connected to purpose and meaning to the &#8220;Why&#8221; and the &#8220;How.&#8221; In other words, we begin to live authentically.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The chaplain closes by expressing his belief in a higher purpose, and encourages others to consider theirs:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ultimately, I believe, we all serve a higher purpose that is connected to our true identities.
