{"id":15917,"date":"2012-02-09T02:08:13","date_gmt":"2012-02-09T05:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=15917"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:14:09","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:14:09","slug":"michael-weinstein-cuts-pay-now-under-half-of-charitys-revenue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/09\/michael-weinstein-cuts-pay-now-under-half-of-charitys-revenue\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Weinstein Cuts Pay, Now Under Half of Charity&#8217;s Revenue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Weinstein, the only paid officer and President of his Military Religious Freedom Foundation,\u00a0reduced his personal compensation\u00a0by nearly $80,000 in 2010, according to his most recent tax documents.\u00a0 That same year, his &#8220;charity&#8221; saw a slight decrease in revenue of about $13,000, despite\u00a0$120,000 in\u00a0grants from the Rockefeller Family Fund and $10,000 from the Aspen Community Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In prior years Weinstein&#8217;s exorbitant salaries &#8212; which are paid by himself, to himself, from his\u00a0charity&#8217;s revenue\u00a0&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/18\/michael-weinstein-gets-a-pay-raise-and-religious-freedom-suffers\/\">have been highlighted<\/a> as inconsistent with both his implications that donations to his charity &#8220;support the troops&#8221; and with the general practices of <em>other <\/em>charities, whose president\/CEO compensations are generally markedly lower (even if the charities are markedly <em>larger<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The $218,201 Weinstein paid himself\u00a0from the\u00a0MRFF funds still represented <em><strong>41%<\/strong><\/em> of his charity&#8217;s total revenue in 2010.\u00a0 That&#8217;s down from the <em><strong>54%<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/18\/michael-weinstein-gets-a-pay-raise-and-religious-freedom-suffers\/\">he paid himself in 2009<\/a>, though it still represents a substantial percentage of what his donors are presumably <!--more-->paying the organization to do.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of money he claims his organization\u00a0uses for\u00a0&#8220;program expenses&#8221; (eg, those costs that actually contribute to the mission of his charity), apart from similar known compensations, remained essentially static at about $106,000, though that included non-descript &#8220;consulting,&#8221; &#8220;support,&#8221; and similar costs, and presumably other expenses like Weinstein&#8217;s much ballyhooed personal bodyguards.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not insignificant, either, considering the law firms who do the actual legal <em>work <\/em>on Weinstein&#8217;s behalf reportedly do so pro bono, raising the question of what his donors are actually paying for.\u00a0 The rest of the funds went to management and fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>While most people likely\u00a0assume charities are supported by individuals and their checkbooks, it seems there is a veritable mass market of inter-organizational grants, often from one charity to another. In 2009, for example, a full 20% of Weinstein&#8217;s donations came from a single source:\u00a0 the Jewish Communal Fund.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010 Weinstein announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdncenter.org\/pnd\/jobs\/job_item_print.jhtml;jsessionid=LXCCOVJWG54ZTLAQBQ4CGXD5AAAACI2F?id=297100025\">job opening at the MRFF<\/a> &#8212; for a person whose sole purpose would be to obtain grants for his charity.\u00a0 Given the drop off in funding, it doesn&#8217;t seem that turned out like he&#8217;d hoped.\u00a0 In fact, the Jewish Communal Fund reduced its contributions to the MRFF to $28,000 from $115,000 the prior year.\u00a0 The Stiefel Freethought Foundation &#8212; the same person <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/16\/military-atheist-festival-at-fort-bragg-gets-funded\/\">footing the $50,000 tab for Rock Beyond Belief<\/a> &#8212; contributed $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>In short, Michael Weinstein may have tightened his belt in 2010, but his personal compensation still amounted to nearly half of everything his &#8220;charity&#8221; brought in.\u00a0 If the trend continued into Michael Weinstein&#8217;s 2011 salary (something that won&#8217;t be known until next year, due to Weinstein&#8217;s habit of delaying his tax filings),\u00a0contributors to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation will have paid Weinstein more than $1 million, plus expenses:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MRFF Compensation to Michael Weinstein:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 240px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffirs2005.pdf\">2005<\/a>: Formed<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffirs2006.pdf\">2006<\/a>: $116,330<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffirs2007.pdf\">2007<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/18\/michael-weinstein-gets-a-pay-raise-and-religious-freedom-suffers\/#comment-20327\">$0<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffirs2008.pdf\">2008<\/a>: $252,485<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffirs2009.pdf\">2009<\/a>: $296,232<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/mrffirs2010.pdf\">2010<\/a>: $218,201<br \/>\n2011: <em>Not yet reported<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a fair sum for someone who does little more than publish diatribes filled with alliterative hyperbole against religious freedom in the US military.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also notable that over the course of his &#8220;charity&#8217;s&#8221; existence, with the exception of the outlier in 2007, he&#8217;s taken an average of 47% of his charity&#8217;s revenue as his personal compensation.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, nearly half of every dollar sent to his charity has gone directly to his paycheck.<\/p>\n<p>Not a bad gig if you can get it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Weinstein, the only paid officer and President of his Military Religious Freedom Foundation,\u00a0reduced his personal compensation\u00a0by nearly $80,000 in 2010, according to his most recent tax documents.\u00a0 That same year, his &#8220;charity&#8221; saw a slight decrease in revenue of about $13,000, despite\u00a0$120,000 in\u00a0grants from the Rockefeller Family Fund and $10,000 from the Aspen Community Foundation.
