{"id":15792,"date":"2012-01-30T02:24:10","date_gmt":"2012-01-30T05:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=15792"},"modified":"2012-01-30T02:25:23","modified_gmt":"2012-01-30T05:25:23","slug":"us-house-passes-bills-on-religion-at-war-memorials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/30\/us-house-passes-bills-on-religion-at-war-memorials\/","title":{"rendered":"US House Passes Bills on Religion at War Memorials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US House of Representatives <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2012\/01\/ap-house-bills-promote-religion-at-war-memorials-012412\/\">passed two separate bills<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/17\/bill-would-permit-religious-symbols-in-military-memorials\/\">previously noted<\/a>) related to religion at US military war memorials &#8212; a point of controversy for about the past two decades in southern California, at least. Though they&#8217;ve been inaccurately described as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2-house-bills-promote-religious-symbols-at-war-memorials\/2012\/01\/24\/gIQAUrdtNQ_story.html\">&#8220;promoting&#8221; religion<\/a>, the first does little more than officially authorize <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/01\/memorial-crosses-as-us-military-tradition\/\">longstanding tradition<\/a>, and the second adds a Presidential statement to a war <!--more-->memorial.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One writes into law the propriety of displaying religious markers at war memorials while the other orders that the Interior Department add to the World War II Memorial in Washington a plaque with Franklin Roosevelt\u2019s prayer to the nation on D-Day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The law allowing religious displays at war memorials was submitted by Rep Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who has come out in defense of both Mount Soledad and the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/14\/congressman-hunter-defends-camp-pendleton-cross\/\">Camp Pendleton war memorial<\/a>. The former was <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/11\/mount-soledad-cross-unconstitutional\/\">declared unconstitutional<\/a> by the 9th Circuit last year; the latter would not likely be affected, since it is not an official\u00a0federal memorial.<\/p>\n<p>The second law adds a prayer by President Franklin Roosevelt to the World War II memorial on the mall.\u00a0 The lengthy prayer can be <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/29\/world-war-ii-memorial-prayer-opposed-by-obama-administration\/\">read here<\/a>.\u00a0 Though <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/29\/world-war-ii-memorial-prayer-opposed-by-obama-administration\/\">it was opposed<\/a> by the Obama administration&#8217;s Bureau of Land Management, it passed the house on a 386-26 vote.<\/p>\n<p>Americans United for the Separation of Church and State reportedly &#8220;urged the Senate to ignore the bills.&#8221;\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.au.org\/blogs\/wall-of-separation\/pious-political-posturing-alert-us-house-set-to-vote-on-bills-promoting\">AU previously said<\/a> they were evidence of Congress lack of priorities.\u00a0 An LA Times editorial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/opinionla\/la-ed-cross-20120129,0,5599419.story\">claimed the laws were unconstitutional<\/a> because they would promote a single religion, presumably because the LA Times feels only Christians want to put up religious memorials.\u00a0 Congressional supporters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-0125-cross-20120125,0,4320713.story\">said the laws were necessary<\/a> to fend off attacks against the memorials in recent years:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hunter said his legislation was needed in the face of legal challenges against the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial &#8220;and the likelihood of more to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our Constitution protects the freedom of religion, not freedom from it,&#8221; Rep. Brian P.
