{"id":15239,"date":"2012-01-17T01:24:32","date_gmt":"2012-01-17T04:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=15239"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:14:15","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:14:15","slug":"us-marines-afghans-prefer-christians-over-atheists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/17\/us-marines-afghans-prefer-christians-over-atheists\/","title":{"rendered":"US Marines: Afghans Prefer Christians over Atheists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was noted here once before that US military fighter pilots sanitize their uniforms prior to combat missions, so if they are captured they have little on their person to provide information to the enemy.\u00a0 However, intel officers occasionally encouraged pilots to carry family photos, thinking the &#8220;personalizing&#8221; aspect of the photo might positively influence their captors&#8217; perspectives.\u00a0 Similarly, some encouraged carrying a religious item like a cross that would be found on them if they were captured.<\/p>\n<p>Why carry an obviously Christian item on a combat sortie into a predominantly Islamic country?<\/p>\n<p>Simple:\u00a0Adversaries, primarily of the Islamic faith, respected Christians as &#8220;people of the book.&#8221;\u00a0 Many have misunderstood Muslims&#8217; use of the term &#8220;infidels,&#8221; which refers to those &#8220;without faith.&#8221;\u00a0 In short, hostile Islamic adversaries viewed a <em>Christian <\/em>in the US military far more positively than an <em>atheist <\/em>in uniform.<\/p>\n<p>The US Marines recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marines.mil\/unit\/iimef\/iimef-fwd\/Pages\/ReligiousshurainGarmsirpromotespeaceandstability.aspx\">capitalized on that knowledge<\/a>, using the faith of an American soldier as a positive message of religious respect to counter the Taliban propaganda of American &#8220;infidels&#8221; &#8212; militant atheists trying to get rid of religion in Afghanistan:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The insurgency puts out a lot of lies; a lot of exaggeration, a lot of false rhetoric that says the ISAF Coalition is a bunch of infidels \u2013 they are contrary to Islam, they want to get rid of religion&#8230;they want to destroy things,&#8221; said [LtCol Pat] Carroll [the cultural and governance advisor].<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 28, Maj. Gen. John A. Toolan, the commanding General of Regional Command Southwest, visited a religious shura (meeting) held Garmsir district center in Helmand province&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>During the shura, Toolan spoke to a room of more than 50 Afghans concerning his own faith and respect of other religions. Although Toolan, the top-ranking general in Helmand province, <em><strong>is a Christian<\/strong><\/em>, it is believed that <strong><em>because he is a man of faith (as opposed to an infidel) that it will send a positive message<\/em><\/strong> to the village elders and religious leaders. [emphasis added]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Interestingly, this article was published before the now-infamous video of the Marines urinating on corpses in Afghanistan&#8211; which the Taliban <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/13\/us-marines-in-corpse-desecration-video-accused-of-atheism\/\">essentially said was proof of America&#8217;s atheism<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Michael Weinstein has said public knowledge of Christians in the US military &#8212; in <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/13\/freedom-group-seeks-ban-on-religious-exercise-in-the-us-military\/\">particular the Marines<\/a> &#8212; are ready-made propaganda for the Islamic-based insurgency.\u00a0 This is obviously in stark contrast to the US military&#8217;s beliefs that faith is a useful point of commonality with Afghans (and <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/22\/us-marines-talk-god-with-afghan-mullahs\/\">a tool<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/17\/us-army-promotes-religion-in-afghanistan\/\">the war<\/a>), and that\u00a0the perception of an American <em>atheist <\/em>is actually more harmful to the US military mission.<\/p>\n<p>LtCol Carroll agreed the knowledge of General Toolan&#8217;s faith would reach the insurgents &#8212; and he was hoping it <em>would<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI have no doubt that what happened today will reach insurgents,\u201d said Carroll. \u201cAt least the message that ISAF came down here, the ISAF commander stood up and said he was a man of faith and had respect for the religion and culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t like it.
