{"id":15063,"date":"2011-12-30T01:42:52","date_gmt":"2011-12-30T04:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=15063"},"modified":"2011-12-30T01:42:52","modified_gmt":"2011-12-30T04:42:52","slug":"the-us-military-and-christmas-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/30\/the-us-military-and-christmas-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"The US Military and Christmas Around the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few examples of the US military&#8217;s commitment to supporting its servicemembers through their religious celebrations:<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Ali Al Salem in Kuwait<\/strong>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/81836\/christmas-unity\">Christmas Eve candlelight service<\/a> was the &#8220;culminating event over the month of celebration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>US Army Chief of Chaplains MajGen Donald Rutherford presided over a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/81853\/chaplain-maj-gen-donald-rutherford-visits-red-bulls-camp-buehring-kuwait\">Christmas Eve Catholic Mass<\/a> at <strong>Camp Buehring, Kuwait<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of Staff of the Air Force General Norton Schwartz <!--more-->visited <strong>Kunsan Air Base, South Korea <\/strong>during Christmas, where many Airmen are stationed for one-year remotes away from their families. While an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123284659\">article on his trip<\/a> never mentions Christmas, he did make a point to hand out stockings on Christmas Eve, visit the Airmen on duty on December 25th, and help serve a &#8220;holiday&#8221; meal on Christmas. The acknowledgement of the troops&#8217; service on Christmas is one indication of the ability of military leaders to support troops&#8217; religious celebrations without regard to official endorsement or the influence of personal religion. As has been publicly stated before, General Schwartz is Jewish.<\/p>\n<p>Air Force SSgt Kristopher Castillobrock&#8217;s family home was burglarized and their Christmas gifts stolen &#8212; while he was launching missions thousands of miles away in <strong>Afghanistan<\/strong>.\u00a0 Once notified, his fellow Airmen back home not only replaced the presents, but also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123284222\">ensured the security of his family<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Soldiers in <strong>Afghanistan <\/strong>found time to &#8220;celebrate Christmas Eve and Day by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/81775\/task-force-duke-celebrates-christmas-afghanistan\">participating in worship services<\/a> and enjoying a full spread at the Forward Operating Base Salerno dining facility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>USS Bataan <\/strong>held <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/search\/display.asp?story_id=64572\">Christmas decorating<\/a> contests at sea, and the Chaplains hosted Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>USS Carl Vinson <\/strong>had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/search\/display.asp?story_id=64574\">shipwide dinner on December 25th<\/a> cooked in the &#8220;hope for all who celebrate Christmas, it will bring back memories of home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>USS Whidbey Island <\/strong>&#8220;organized a special holiday worship service on Christmas Eve and followed with both Protestant and Catholic worship services Christmas morning.&#8221;\u00a0 They also received <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/search\/display.asp?story_id=64569\">14,000 pounds of mail<\/a> on Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>USS Mesa Verde<\/strong>&#8216;s ship&#8217;s choir went <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/search\/display.asp?story_id=64573\">caroling throughout the ship<\/a> on Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The articles on all four of those ships indicated senior military members helped serve the Christmas meals, and &#8220;giveaways&#8221; on each vessel netted thousands of dollars of Kindles, iPads, and a host of other prizes for crewmembers over the season.<\/p>\n<p>Chaplain (LtCmdr) Michael Tomlinson tried to do what he could to help troops during their <strong>Christmas in Afghanistan<\/strong>. One way was providing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/81741\/you-always-wish-you-could-do-more-chaplain-brings-cheer-marines-helmand-province-during-holiday-season\">opportunities for worship<\/a>: &#8220;For some faith groups, communion is very important and it is something special we can do for Marines.&#8221; Chaplain Capt. Omari Thompson likewise visited many locations <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/for-troops-cards-and-care-packages-bring-a-touch-of-home-to-christmas-1.164422\">providing Christmas services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The US military also brought Christmas to other parts of the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sailors and Marines of the <strong>USS Makin Island <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/search\/display.asp?story_id=64565\">visited the &#8220;Child at Street 11&#8221;<\/a> care center in Singapore, along with Santa Claus.\u00a0 In what is likely a first for a military news article, it specifically said the organization was &#8220;multi-racial, <em><strong>secular<\/strong><\/em>, independent, non-profit&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few examples of the US military&#8217;s commitment to supporting its servicemembers through their religious celebrations: At Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, a Christmas Eve candlelight service was the &#8220;culminating event over the month of celebration.&#8221; US Army Chief of Chaplains MajGen Donald Rutherford presided over a Christmas Eve Catholic Mass at Camp Buehring, Kuwait.
