{"id":14874,"date":"2012-01-09T01:23:53","date_gmt":"2012-01-09T04:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=14874"},"modified":"2012-01-09T01:23:53","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T04:23:53","slug":"military-divorce-rate-highest-ever-mercyme-teams-with-familylife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/09\/military-divorce-rate-highest-ever-mercyme-teams-with-familylife\/","title":{"rendered":"Military Divorce Rate Highest Ever, MercyMe Teams with FamilyLife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The rate of divorce in the US military was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2011\/12\/military-divorce-rate-rises-slightly-2011-121411w\/\">recently reported<\/a> as 3.7%, with an increase in officer divorces accounting for an increase in the military as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2011\/12\/airforce-divorce-rate-highest-in-military-123111\/\">Air Force had<\/a> the highest rate, at 3.9%.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/military\/story\/2011-12-13\/military-divorce-rate-increases\/51888872\/1\">Enlisted women<\/a> had a nearly 10% divorce rate.<\/p>\n<p>The general American population had divorce rate of 3.5% in 2009, the last year for which numbers are available.\u00a0 (It&#8217;s unclear if these &#8220;population&#8221; numbers also included members of the military.)<\/p>\n<p>While this may sound dire, it&#8217;s also worth noting it is difficult to <!--more-->assess the numbers in a vacuum.\u00a0 For one thing, the military is a select population based on gender, age, and a variety of characteristics (including stress and combat).\u00a0 Thus, it is difficult to compare it directly to the general population.\u00a0 In addition, some reports have indicated the rate of <em>marriage <\/em>is also higher in the military than in the civilian population.<\/p>\n<p>Family and quality of life are significant factors in a military member&#8217;s professional readiness, which is why <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/04\/fort-bragg-chaplains-encourage-strong-bonds-in-marriage\/\">marriage and family seminars feature so prominently<\/a> in support for the military mission.<\/p>\n<p>(For those trying to square these statistics with the stereotypical &#8220;half of all marriages end in divorce&#8221; numbers, remember the numbers cited here are per <em>year<\/em>, not per marriage.)<\/p>\n<p>In response to the seriousness of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2012\/01\/MONDAYap-veterans-marriage-retreat-010212\/\">challenges to military marriages<\/a>, the Christian music group MercyMe has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2012\/01\/02\/military-marriages-need-support-as-our-troops-return-home\/\">teamed with FamilyLife<\/a> for their 2012 tour to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/2011\/12\/31\/4154383\/troops-returning-from-iraq-face.html\">support military marriages<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lead singer Bart Millard said, &#8220;FamilyLife has stepped up and said this needs to happen for our troops. Trying to keep military families together is something I take very seriously.
