{"id":14485,"date":"2011-12-06T03:04:55","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T06:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=14485"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:14:23","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:14:23","slug":"walter-reed-rescinds-ban-on-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/06\/walter-reed-rescinds-ban-on-bible\/","title":{"rendered":"Walter Reed Rescinds Ban on Bible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span><\/em>: More than 20,000 people\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/over-20000-sign-petition-over-banned-bibles-at-military-hospital-64207\/\">signed a petition<\/a> in less than 24 hours to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frc.org\/get.cfm?c=CHECKOUT&amp;dmy=1B860E7F-974A-C71E-64C548AB3B0299F0&amp;CFID=34069913&amp;CFTOKEN=8b551fb39dcd364a-DC7D67DB-F38E-2EC0-92170F6FF7988CB6\">help end the ban<\/a>&#8221; on Bibles at Walter Reed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A US\u00a0Army officer &#8220;in disbelief&#8221; forwarded a Walter Reed National Military Medical Center memorandum regarding patient visitation to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\/\">Family Research Council<\/a>.\u00a0 The memorandum said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>f. No religious items (i.e. Bibles, reading material, and\/or artifacts) are allowed to be given away or used during a visit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ban was so broadly written it would prevent even families from providing Bibles to their wounded family members, and it banned priests from bringing the eucharist or providing last rites.\u00a0 Notably, while the policy banned all religious items, the Bible was the only religious text specifically mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>The FRC circulated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/articles\/files\/bibleban.pdf\">the memorandum<\/a> at Capitol Hill, and Rep Steve King (R-Iowa) took to the House floor and <a href=\"http:\/\/steveking.house.gov\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=4320:king-we-must-honor-the-men-and-women-in-our-military-by-protecting-the-first-amendment&amp;catid=71:press-releases&amp;Itemid=300164&amp;Itemid=300099\">&#8220;blasted&#8221; the policy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. Speaker, these military men and women who are recovering at Walter Reed and Bethesda have given their all for America&#8230;They&#8217;ve <!--more-->defended and taken an oath to the Constitution, and here they are. The people that come to visit them can&#8217;t bring a religious artifact? They can&#8217;t bring a Bible?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A spokesman said the policy has been rescinded (though there is yet to be\u00a0an official statement saying so)\u00a0and they<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>appreciate Congressman King bringing this to our attention. We don\u2019t want our instructions to be ambiguous.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem is the policy <em>wasn&#8217;t <\/em>ambiguous.\u00a0 It clearly restricted religious items from Walter Reed.\u00a0 Walter Reed public affairs officer Sandy Dean said the policy was intended to &#8220;respect&#8221; the &#8220;religious and cultural practices of our patients.&#8221;\u00a0 The proper way to &#8220;respect&#8221; patients&#8217; practices is to let them and their families exercise their religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p>The military is required to protect the religious liberty of US servicemembers and ensure their free exercise to the extent allowed by the mission.\u00a0 There is no indication a mission need dictated this restriction on Bibles.\u00a0 There is no conceivable reason a ban on Bibles is either permissible or Constitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Who could possibly think a proactive policy banning religious items at a military medical facility was\u00a0a good idea?\u00a0 Tony Perkins&#8217; Family Research Council says it&#8217;s just the latest indicator of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\/washingtonupdate\/the-genesis-of-the-bibles-exodus-from-troop-hospitals\">hostility toward Christianity in the US military<\/a> (links original):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is Obama&#8217;s military, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2011\/09\/20\/national\/main20108690.shtml\">homosexuality is celebrated<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2011\/08\/03\/air-forces-suspends-christian-themed-ethics-training-program-over-bible\/\">Christianity is censored<\/a>; where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-air-force-pagans-20111127,0,812946,print.story\">witches are financed<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nctimes.com\/news\/local\/military\/military-second-group-calls-for-pendleton-cross-to-come-down\/article_9bd92843-4d77-5339-9295-9e80d81d3285.html\">crosses are scorned<\/a>; where <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/senate-poised-legalize-sodomy-and-bestiality-us-military\">bestiality is embraced<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/downloads.frc.org\/EF\/EF11L05.pdf\">Bibles are banned<\/a>; where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/federal-eye\/post\/gay-weddings-can-be-performed-by-military-chaplains-pentagon-says\/2011\/09\/30\/gIQA0hX19K_blog.html\">same-sex &#8220;weddings&#8221; are encouraged<\/a> but <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/air-force-academy-backs-away-from-christmas-charity.html\">international charity is not<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After three years of ideological warfare, the administration&#8217;s intent is clear: to disarm the military of its biggest weapon. Faith.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of President Obama&#8217;s agenda, there is absolutely nothing in the Constitution that empowers the government to stop family members from giving Bibles or crosses to their loved ones.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(The ACLJ recently drew a similar conclusion, saying some groups are starting to complain there&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/aclj.org\/american-heritage\/too-much-religious-liberty-america\">too much religious liberty<\/a>&#8221; in America.)\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/radio.foxnews.com\/toddstarnes\/top-stories\/u-s-military-to-rescind-policy-banning-bibles-at-hospital.html\">FoxNews reports<\/a> Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention called on those responsible for the policy to be fired, saying it shows the &#8220;pseudo-tolerance of secularism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is surprising to see a military policy so blatantly contravene religious liberty, particularly without some form of &#8220;provocation.&#8221;\u00a0 While rescinding the policy\u00a0is good, the fact the policy was even put in <em>place <\/em>is disconcerting, and it remains to be seen what the &#8220;revised&#8221; policy will be regarding Bibles at Walter Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Think &#8220;religious freedom&#8221; critic Michael Weinstein will attack Walter Reed with alliterative vitriol or threaten them\u00a0with a lawsuit over this &#8216;clear violation of religious liberty?&#8217;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update: More than 20,000 people\u00a0signed a petition in less than 24 hours to &#8220;help end the ban&#8221; on Bibles at Walter Reed.
