{"id":14482,"date":"2011-12-09T01:02:38","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T04:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=14482"},"modified":"2013-10-27T22:49:01","modified_gmt":"2013-10-28T01:49:01","slug":"marine-commandant-pleased-with-dadt-repeal-implementation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/09\/marine-commandant-pleased-with-dadt-repeal-implementation\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Commandant Pleased with DADT Repeal Implementation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commandant of the US Marine Corps General James Amos was the most senior military member to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/20\/general-says-repeal-may-cost-lives-congress-repeals-dadt\/\">oppose repeal of the policy<\/a> known as &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell.&#8221; In an AP story last week, Amos indicates he is &#8220;very pleased&#8221; with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2011\/11\/ap-amos-marines-embracing-dadt-repeal-112811\/\">how repeal has been implemented<\/a>, but has no regrets about his initial opposition.<\/p>\n<p>The article, perhaps unintentionally, demonstrates a misunderstanding of the situation as it equates silence with ambivalence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The apparent absence of angst about gays serving openly in the Marines seemed to confirm Amos&#8217; view that <!--more-->the change has been taken in stride, without hurting the war effort&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia O. Smith, said implementation of the repeal of the gay ban is proceeding smoothly across the military.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We attribute this success to our comprehensive pre-repeal training program&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, the &#8220;apparent absence of angst&#8221; &#8212; a conclusion drawn by the absence of questions on the subject directed at the Commandant &#8212; is more likely the result of both directed silence and resignation.\u00a0 Military leadership long ago communicated to the rank-and-file that <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/12\/general-mixon-retires-reiterates-stance-on-dadt\/\">vocalized opposition to repeal was not acceptable<\/a>.\u00a0 Likewise, line troops know that asking a General the same question to which he&#8217;s already said &#8220;no&#8221; won&#8217;t change policy.<\/p>\n<p>The 56% of combat Marines who felt repeal would negatively impact the force &#8212; a statistic cited in the article &#8212; didn&#8217;t suddenly change their mind because of &#8220;training&#8221; or epiphanies.\u00a0 In fact, they may likely feel the same as they did.\u00a0 It just does no good to express those opinions publicly.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude, then, that US Marines are &#8220;embracing [the] gay ban repeal,&#8221; as the AP does, is disingenuous.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commandant of the US Marine Corps General James Amos was the most senior military member to oppose repeal of the policy known as &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell.&#8221; In an AP story last week, Amos indicates he is &#8220;very pleased&#8221; with how repeal has been implemented, but has no regrets about his initial opposition.
