Albert Mohler, Jr, the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, attempted to address the then-prominent controversy over <a href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/10\/15\/my-take-are-evangelicals-dangerous\/\">Christians and Christianity in political life<\/a>.\u00a0 Whether you call it &#8220;dominionism&#8221; or just &#8220;fundamentalism,&#8221; Mohler took on the issue of those who are decrying the rise of &#8220;Christian nationalism.&#8221;\u00a0 He asks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What is so scary about America\u2019s evangelical Christians?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and notes the chorus of voices warning about the rise of a Christian &#8220;theocratic state,&#8221; &#8220;Christian nationalism,&#8221; and a usurpation by <!--more-->conservative Christian American &#8220;fascists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And so-called New Atheists like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris claim that conservative Christians are nothing less than a threat to democracy. They prescribe atheism and secularism as the antidotes&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Is it really as dire as all that?\u00a0 Mohler says no:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The vast majority of evangelicals are not attempting to create a theocracy, or to oppose democracy.<\/p>\n<p>To the contrary, evangelicals are dangerous to the secularist vision of this nation and its future precisely because we are committed to participatory democracy&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mohler reveals that the central issue is much simpler:\u00a0 It is the age old norm of issue-based politics.\u00a0 Members of one group\u00a0hold some positions\u00a0in part due to the precepts of their faith (among which might include abortion, marriage, poverty, and the environment).\u00a0 On the opposite side, others\u00a0hold to the opposite belief\u00a0based on their <em>own<\/em> group ideology.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than rebut their ideological opponents on the merits of the political issues, those decrying the &#8220;dangerous&#8221;\u00a0rise of Christianity are fighting their opposition on the basis of their underlying <em>faith<\/em>.\u00a0 To them, if a position is remotely related to a person&#8217;s religious faith, it is invalid as a political argument.<\/p>\n<p>This has come to the forefront in recent years because Christians have more faithfully integrated their faith and their daily lives.\u00a0 The &#8220;danger&#8221; exists only to those who feel their ideological position is worthy of no political opposition, even in a democratic society.\u00a0 Mohler concludes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But over recent decades, evangelical Christians have learned that the gospel has implications for every dimension of life, including our political responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re dangerous only to those who want more secular voices to have a virtual monopoly in public life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The outcry from Michael Weinstein, Chris Rodda, and Rick Baker over Christians in the US military little different, except Weinstein&#8217;s group\u00a0gets to connect Christianity to guns and <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/20\/mrff-breaks-secret-christan-code\/\">nuclear weapons for dramatic effect<\/a>.\u00a0 Unable to form a cogent argument against\u00a0those who support religious freedom and\u00a0living\u00a0the Christian faith within the military, the trio instead oppose Christians in the military based on their <em>faith<\/em>, with Weinstein&#8217;s group claiming <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/21\/weinstein-attacks-usafa-speaker-wrong-kind-of-christian\/\">only the &#8216;right kind&#8217; of Christian should be able to serve or speak publicly<\/a> in the US military.\u00a0 If they&#8217;re not an MRFF-approved Christian, they&#8217;re described with such dire words as\u00a0&#8216;national security threat,&#8217;\u00a0with Weinstein personally\u00a0claiming knowledge of a\u00a0plan to <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/26\/weinstein-predicts-holocaust-goes-after-presidential-candidates\/\">institute a second holocaust in the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Christians in the military aren&#8217;t any more &#8220;dangerous&#8221; than those in the political sphere.\u00a0 Groups like Weinstein&#8217;s, however, that actively seek restrictions on the religious liberties\u00a0of groups whose theologies they oppose, <em>could <\/em>be dangerous &#8212; if Weinstein and his crew weren&#8217;t recognized for the fringe conspiracy group they are.<\/p>\n<p>Read\u00a0Mohler&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/10\/15\/my-take-are-evangelicals-dangerous\/\">full commentary here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though the furor has died down in the intervening few months, an October column by R.
