{"id":14246,"date":"2011-12-01T02:15:51","date_gmt":"2011-12-01T05:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=14246"},"modified":"2011-11-28T02:30:58","modified_gmt":"2011-11-28T05:30:58","slug":"memorial-crosses-as-us-military-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/01\/memorial-crosses-as-us-military-tradition\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Crosses as US Military Tradition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some in American society today seem to think resurgent zealots are trying to push Christianity on society through their use of crosses, even within the US military.<\/p>\n<p>Facts, however, show the long tradition of use of crosses as military memorials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/hyperwar\/USMC\/USMC-M-Tarawa\/img\/USMC-M-Tarawa-p69.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christianfighterpilot.com\/images\/tarawa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"463\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>THIS SIMPLE CROSS WAS ERECTED at the western tip of Betio as a monument in memory of the 2nd Division Marines who were killed in the battle for Tarawa.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Crosses have been raised on <!--more-->the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/hyperwar\/USMC\/USMC-M-Tarawa\/USMC-M-Tarawa-7.html\">Pacific island of Tarawa<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arlingtoncemetery.mil\/VisitorInformation\/MonumentMemorials\/ArgonneCross.aspx\">hills of Arlington<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arlingtoncemetery.mil\/VisitorInformation\/MonumentMemorials\/CanadianCross.aspx\">twice<\/a>), the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/17\/obama-administration-sued-for-not-transferring-land-cross\/\">deserts of\u00a0California<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/mount-soledad-case-review-denied\/\">hills of San Diego<\/a>, among many other places.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to internet tropes, no Christian believes raising a cross memorial wins converts.\u00a0 Erecting a cross does not establish a religion nor favor one.\u00a0 A cross on federal land, in and of itself, does not violate the US Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>It does cause us to pause and remember &#8220;our honored dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Religious freedom is not assured by tearing those memorials down nor by\u00a0prohibiting them from going up.\u00a0 Just because someone is offended by the sight of a cross &#8212; regardless of its purpose &#8212; does not grant them a heckler&#8217;s veto to another person&#8217;s expression or exercise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some in American society today seem to think resurgent zealots are trying to push Christianity on society through their use of crosses, even within the US military.
