{"id":13438,"date":"2011-09-28T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=13438"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:06","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:06","slug":"gazette-on-weinstein-miffed-usafa-critic-buys-billboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/28\/gazette-on-weinstein-miffed-usafa-critic-buys-billboard\/","title":{"rendered":"Gazette on Weinstein: Miffed USAFA Critic Buys Billboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Colorado Springs Gazette<\/em>, local to the US Air Force Academy, noted that religious freedom critic\u00a0Michael Weinstein <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazette.com\/articles\/miffed-125761-critic-afa.html\">apparently bought a billboard ad<\/a> to publish Air Force Chief of Staff <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/14\/top-air-force-general-issues-order-on-religious-neutrality\/\">General Norton Schwartz&#8217;s memorandum<\/a>\u00a0on religious neutrality, which Chris Rodda says USAFA is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/27\/weinstein-rodda-go-after-general-gould-and-get-it-wrong-again\/\">withholding<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Air Force Academy critic Mikey Weinstein, miffed that a four-star\u2019s memo on religious respect wasn\u2019t e-mailed to cadets at the Air Force Academy, published the 200-word memo himself Tuesday on a Colorado Springs billboard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weinstein is apparently relegated to billboards because USAFA won&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/01\/usafa-is-done-with-michael-weinstein\/\">answer his voluminous emails<\/a> or return his phone calls.\u00a0 Publicly, he claims he billboarded the memo because General Gould wouldn&#8217;t give in to his demands:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Weinstein] demanded that the academy give a copy of the Schwartz memo to all 4,000 cadets, along with all other airmen, civilians and contractors on the campus.<\/p>\n<p>Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Gould didn\u2019t comply with Weinstein\u2019s demand despite threats that the foundation \u201cwill do what is just and right and undertake its best efforts to, once again, do your duty for you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what&#8217;s the point of buying a billboard\u00a0&#8212; which is an eye chart anyway &#8212; for something you can find on the internet?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While the memo may be hard to read for drivers whizzing by, Weinstein said the point is simple: He won\u2019t tolerate religious discrimination at the academy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Putting up the billboard equals not tolerating religious discrimination?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how Weinstein arrives at that illogical conclusion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Weinstein&#8230;said by not distributing the memo to all at the academy, Gould is essentially endorsing proselytizing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, that makes <em>complete <\/em>sense &#8212; for someone who <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/09\/seymour-hersh-and-michael-weinstein-share-conspiracy-theories\/\">sees a Christian conspiracy<\/a> around every corner.\u00a0 First, the topic of proselytizing &#8212; &#8220;converting&#8221; &#8212; isn&#8217;t even\u00a0mentioned in the memo.\u00a0 For those who haven&#8217;t read it (like Weinstein, apparently), the memo addresses concerns of endorsement and establishment.\u00a0 Second,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/14\/top-air-force-general-issues-order-on-religious-neutrality\/\">General Schwartz himself<\/a> &#8220;seemed to reject the idea that commanders or others were deliberately and knowingly attempting to recruit for their own religion.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Third, the memo was addressed to General Gould, as a DRU\/CC.\u00a0 It was not addressed to &#8220;all at the academy.&#8221;\u00a0 While he is responsible for the conduct of the commanders subordinate to him, he is not compelled\u00a0to &#8220;forward&#8221; a message simply because Michael Weinstein says so.<\/p>\n<p>General Gould is under no obligation to surrender to Michael Weinstein&#8217;s every tantrum.\u00a0 As a military commander, General Gould is free to lead USAFA as he sees fit, consistent with Air Force policies &#8212; which is exactly what he has done.\u00a0 (Despite the public derision, neither Weinstein nor Rodda provide\u00a0proof to the contrary.)\u00a0 General Gould has a mission to accomplish:\u00a0 It involves\u00a0turning around 4,400 cadets into Air Force officers.
