{"id":13171,"date":"2011-09-21T01:45:33","date_gmt":"2011-09-21T06:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=13171"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:06","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:06","slug":"us-military-helps-afghans-build-true-muslim-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/21\/us-military-helps-afghans-build-true-muslim-army\/","title":{"rendered":"US Military Helps Afghans Build &#8220;True Muslim&#8221; Army"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US military&#8217;s support of the Afghan&#8217;s practice of Islam has been reported, though not necessarily widely so.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Post <\/em>recently noted the Afghan military is working to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/afghan-army-fights-to-prove-its-religious-credentials\/2011\/08\/26\/gIQAl6FF6J_story.html\">viewed as &#8220;true Muslims,&#8221;<\/a> or more Islamic than the Taliban.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The [Afghan] campaign represents a bold effort to counter Taliban propaganda and establish the Islamic credentials of the armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting the battle over religion &#8212; often the key to public support in this conservative Islamic nation &#8212; is perhaps the Taliban\u2019s strongest suit. If Afghans doubt the spiritual bona fides of their army, the institution stands little chance of gaining popular support.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Post <\/em>article notes US officials have been &#8220;eager&#8221; to bolster the credentials of the Afghan military, and supporting this effort is one way they can do that:\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>U.S. officials, eager to promote Afghan forces as the country\u2019s true protectors, have attempted to aid their partners in that campaign. The Americans fund radio stations, encouraging Afghan military personnel to discuss Islamic matters on the air, as well as security issues. Western forces also promote local shuras, or consultations, where Afghan security officials can take their message to tribal elders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Notably,\u00a0Michael Weinstein\u00a0and his allies have been quick to disparage any <em>hint <\/em>of an association of\u00a0Christianity\u00a0with the US military &#8212; and are noticeably silent when the US military has actively <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/20\/taxpayer-money-promoting-islam-worldwide\/\">promoted Islam<\/a>,\u00a0even as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/17\/us-army-promotes-religion-in-afghanistan\/\">a weapon<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As has been highlighted here before, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/22\/us-marines-talk-god-with-afghan-mullahs\/\">religion is integral<\/a> to the culture of Afghanistan, making it integral to the conduct and success of the war.\u00a0 Despite some unfounded assertions, religion is relevant to the American culture, too.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <em>religious freedom<\/em>, rather than a specific\u00a0<em>religion<\/em>,\u00a0should arguably be one of the higher\u00a0objectives of the American mission in Afghanistan.\u00a0 While the promotion of Islam may bring a sense of &#8220;peace,&#8221; it remains to be seen if it will bring Afghans &#8220;liberty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"smallfont\">Also noted at the <a href=\"http:\/\/religionclause.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/afghan-army-works-to-bolster-its-muslim.html\">Religion Clause<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US military&#8217;s support of the Afghan&#8217;s practice of Islam has been reported, though not necessarily widely so.
