{"id":13039,"date":"2011-09-06T01:30:14","date_gmt":"2011-09-06T06:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=13039"},"modified":"2011-09-04T23:37:24","modified_gmt":"2011-09-05T04:37:24","slug":"if-you-can-play-xbox-you-can-fly-uavs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/06\/if-you-can-play-xbox-you-can-fly-uavs\/","title":{"rendered":"If You Can Play Xbox, You Can Fly UAVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US Army Specialist Benjamin Halbert <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/76147\/if-you-can-play-xbox-you-can-fly-raven\">recently said<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you can play Xbox, you can fly a Raven.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, that kind of attitude is ultimately how you <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/18\/c-130-uav-collide-over-afghanistan\/\">run airplanes into each other<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Raven <\/em>is a rucked-in, hand-launched UAV with a four-foot wingspan.\u00a0 Halbert&#8217;s point is probably that it is not complicated to <em>fly <\/em>&#8212; which is true.<\/p>\n<p>But physically flying the UAV is only one <!--more-->part of the operation.\u00a0 There are other things to consider, from sensor operations to traffic conflicts.\u00a0 Those who operate UAVs need to be &#8220;aviators&#8221; in some context.\u00a0 That doesn&#8217;t mean they need to be <em>pilots<\/em>, but they do need to understand the four-dimensional aspects of operating an airborne vehicle among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<p>Playing\u00a0Xbox no more prepares you to fly a real <em>Raven\u00a0<\/em>in combat than it prepares you to\u00a0drive a real car on the interstate or in New York City traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The UAVs they operate may be &#8220;disposable&#8221; in some regard, but the airplanes they&#8217;re flying alongside &#8212; and the people inside them &#8212; aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Army Specialist Benjamin Halbert recently said If you can play Xbox, you can fly a Raven.
