{"id":12854,"date":"2011-09-08T02:30:54","date_gmt":"2011-09-08T07:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=12854"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:07","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:07","slug":"military-atheists-and-higher-things-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/08\/military-atheists-and-higher-things-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"Military Atheists and &#8220;Higher&#8221; Things&#8230;or Not"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ABC News recently did a short segment on the <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/23\/comprehensive-soldier-fitness-from-general-marshall\/\">US Army&#8217;s Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program<\/a>, or, more accurately, the spiritual fitness portion of it.<\/p>\n<p>They interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/16\/millionth-soldier-takes-army-gat\/\">Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum<\/a>, a PhD, MD, <em>Desert Storm <\/em>POW, and current Director of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness in the Army.<\/p>\n<p>They also interviewed US Army Sgt Dustin Chalker, an atheist Soldier whom Michael Weinstein used to sue the US Army.\u00a0 (The lawsuit was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/07\/atheist-lawsuit-against-us-military-dismissed\/\">dismissed<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>While military atheists have generally taken issue with the entire <em>concept <\/em>of &#8220;spiritual fitness,&#8221; the following portion of the interview was highlighted by Justin Griffith on his atheist &#8220;Rock Beyond Belief&#8221; website:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sciutto (ABC News): Why is it that spiritual people make better soldiers?<\/p>\n<p>Cornum: The ethos that we adhere to.\u00a0Always place the mission first. Never accept defeat. Never leave a fallen comrade.\u00a0\u00a0Those kinds of things require you to have belief in something higher than yourself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To be accurate, the US Army did not say <!--more-->&#8220;spiritual people make better Soldiers,&#8221; as the <a href=\"http:\/\/rockbeyondbelief.com\/2011\/08\/23\/u-s-army-says-spiritual-people-make-better-soldiers\/\">atheists claimed<\/a>,\u00a0though it is the question to which Gen Cornum responded.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the 2 minute segment lacks context on what either the interviewer or General Cornum understood &#8220;spiritual people&#8221; to mean.<\/p>\n<p>Chalker apparently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rockbeyondbelief.com\/2011\/08\/23\/u-s-army-says-spiritual-people-make-better-soldiers\/#comments\">took issue<\/a>\u00a0with the General&#8217;s statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dustin Chalker<br \/>\nAugust 24, 2011 at 12:56 am<\/p>\n<p>Thanks, Justin! I just can\u2019t get over the absolutely blatent EO violation: \u201cThose kinds of things require you to have a belief in something higher than yourself.\u201d Really? We\u2019re talking about the warrior ethos here, not some religious creed&#8230;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe only thing the warrior ethos requires is a belief in something *equal* to yourself, which means: your fellow battle buddy next to you. I believe battle buddies exist. That\u2019s it. Nothing \u201chigher\u201d in any \u201cspiritual\u201d sense.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, the controversy is manufactured.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/03\/military-atheists-stretch-for-something-to-be-offended-by\/\">Again<\/a>.\u00a0 This time it appears to be over a poor transcription.\u00a0 Despite the supposed quotation, BG Cornum <em>didn&#8217;t say that<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As both the <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/WNT\/video\/spiritual-fitness-book-military-soldier-faith-religion-14351839\">video<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www6.lexisnexis.com\/publisher\/EndUser?Action=UserDisplayFullDocument&amp;orgId=574&amp;topicId=100007216&amp;docId=l:1484305240\">transcript<\/a> show, <em>this <\/em>was her answer:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The ethos that we adhere to: Always place the mission first. Never accept defeat. Never leave a fallen comrade \u2013 Those kinds of things require you to have belief in something <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>bigger<\/strong><\/span> than yourself. [emphasis added]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The atheists&#8217; error may be a result of confirmation bias or expectation error &#8212; the atheists are hearing what they expect or <em>want<\/em> to hear, not what&#8217;s actually <em>said<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly even atheists would agree that there are things &#8220;bigger&#8221; than themselves they need to believe in consistent with the Army ethos.\u00a0 How about the Army itself?\u00a0 The mission?\u00a0 Their unit?\u00a0 Their squad?\u00a0 Maybe the US\u00a0Constitution?\u00a0 Truth, justice, the American way?<\/p>\n<p>Semantics aside, it seems some are so determined to criticize the Army&#8217;s efforts they are unable to acknowledge the good or\u00a0positive\u00a0value in <em>any <\/em>position bearing the <em>slightest <\/em>similarity to that\u00a0which they oppose.\u00a0 (This characteristic is strikingly similar to Chris Rodda&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/08\/mrff-belittles-senator-cornyns-defense-of-constitution\">need to emphasize &#8216;complete disagreement&#8217;<\/a> with a Senator defending the Constitution.)<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, despite the hypersensitivity on the atheists&#8217; parts to certain words in the English language, it&#8217;s unlikely many people within the military <em>actually <\/em>feel <em>nothing<\/em> is bigger (or higher) than\u00a0themselves.\u00a0 After all, why would someone join the military if they truly felt there was nothing worth fighting for bigger than themselves?\u00a0 (It&#8217;s unlikely, though possible, one might join for personal gain, but such a motivation would likely not persist long enough to survive the early stages of military training.)<\/p>\n<p>The greatest Soldiers have been defined by their desire to <em>serve<\/em>.\u00a0 If there is nothing bigger or higher than the individual, your highest calling is to\u00a0serve <em>yourself <\/em>&#8212; and that would make a poor Soldier.<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0true that when the bullets start flying, servicemembers will often say they fight for the Soldier fighting next to them or the Airman flying on their wing.
