{"id":12801,"date":"2011-08-26T01:45:21","date_gmt":"2011-08-26T06:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=12801"},"modified":"2011-08-26T00:55:52","modified_gmt":"2011-08-26T05:55:52","slug":"atheists-conduct-study-on-spirituality-in-the-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/26\/atheists-conduct-study-on-spirituality-in-the-military\/","title":{"rendered":"Atheists Conduct Study on Spirituality in the Military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atheistresearch.org\/\">Center for Atheist Research<\/a> is apparently conducting a study on spirituality in the military in response to the US Army&#8217;s (<a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/19\/fundamentalist-agnostic-wrote-armys-spiritual-fitness-test\/\">criticized<\/a>) Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program.<\/p>\n<p>The study is being used to research &#8220;the validity&#8221; of the CSF &#8220;spiritual fitness&#8221; attributes, and it appears to do so in some part by using the same questions that appeared in the military&#8217;s asssessment.<\/p>\n<p>The design of the test is interesting.\u00a0 For example, some atheists complained about the military&#8217;s agree\/disagree question about &#8220;My life has lasting meaning,&#8221; and the survey repeats that question.\u00a0 Later, it asks a variety of related questions which seem to be trying to determine (in a less direct way) if the person really <em>does<\/em> feel <!--more-->their life has &#8220;lasting meaning,&#8221; seemingly trying to determine if they have a\u00a0bias against the wording of the question influencing\u00a0their (truthful) answer.<\/p>\n<p>While some military atheists have decried the military&#8217;s use of the term &#8220;spiritual,&#8221; the survey itself acknowledges the varying use of the word.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some people use the terms \u201cspirituality\u201d and \u201cspiritual\u201d in a broad, NON-supernatural sense. They see those terms as just having to do with: a special or intense experience, an appreciation for existence, meaning in life, peacefulness, harmony, the quest for well-being, or emotional connection with people, humanity, nature, or the universe.
