{"id":12628,"date":"2011-08-22T01:30:37","date_gmt":"2011-08-22T06:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=12628"},"modified":"2011-08-21T23:26:20","modified_gmt":"2011-08-22T04:26:20","slug":"annapolis-mids-on-recon-abscond-with-souvenirs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/22\/annapolis-mids-on-recon-abscond-with-souvenirs\/","title":{"rendered":"Annapolis Mids on Recon Abscond with Souvenirs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the <em>Navy Times<\/em>, Naval Academy midshipmen (cadets) went on a little scavenger hunt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/2011\/08\/navy-mids-swiped-souvenirs-from-ex-carrier-saratoga-081511w\/\">aboard the decommissioned USS <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/2011\/08\/navy-mids-swiped-souvenirs-from-ex-carrier-saratoga-081511w\/\">Saratoga<\/a> <\/em>while they were on &#8220;summer cruise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On June 13, four Naval Academy midshipmen snuck aboard the decommissioned carrier&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s when they decided to take things, according to academy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. William Marks. Gauges. A gyrocompass. Display dials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what we can tell, they were overzealous about collecting cool things from a former aircraft carrier,\u201d Marks said Monday. The mids took their appropriated souvenirs back to their yard patrol craft, where they were caught by the officer-in-charge of the YP.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The event is described as a &#8220;recon,&#8221; or &#8220;stunt.&#8221;\u00a0 The Air Force Academy has similar &#8220;spirit missions.&#8221;\u00a0 While all the service academies have rules against &#8220;stealing,&#8221; it is not uncommon &#8212; in fact, its sometimes encouraged &#8212; to appropriate or <!--more-->abscond with certain items for &#8220;motivational&#8221; reasons.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unlikely, for example, that cadets get permission before they &#8220;borrow&#8221; another unit&#8217;s flag or move all of a rival service academy cadet&#8217;s furniture out into the courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>It is sometimes contradictory to have such a permissive attitude in a non-permissive environment, and it occasionally lends itself to &#8220;ethical confusion,&#8221; as when a cadet &#8220;violates&#8221; a code in what is otherwise a &#8220;good faith&#8221; spirit mission or recon.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, most of these incidents are recognized for what they are.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Marks characterized the raid as a \u201crecon\u201d \u2014 as stunts are often known at the academy \u2014 that went overboard. He emphasized that none of the participants had shown any \u201cmalicious intent,\u201d in a previous interview Aug. 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe looked at them,\u201d Marks said of the four mids. \u201cThere were no prior conduct problems.
