{"id":12364,"date":"2011-08-08T01:44:49","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T06:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=12364"},"modified":"2015-06-27T19:15:14","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T22:15:14","slug":"catholics-and-air-force-nuclear-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/08\/catholics-and-air-force-nuclear-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholics and Air Force Nuclear Weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bill Donohue, president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicleague.org\/\">Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights<\/a>, wrote a letter to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/information\/bios\/bio.asp?bioID=6896\">General Edward Rice<\/a>, the Commander of Air Education and Training Command.\u00a0 AETC oversees the training\u00a0program at Vandenberg Air Force Base, which recently <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/05\/liberty-counsel-defends-air-force-nuke-training\/\">dropped a course<\/a> because, <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/04\/air-force-pulls-nuke-training-over-religion-complaint\/\">depending on who you ask<\/a>, it used Bible verses.\u00a0 Calling the Air Force&#8217;s decision to pull the class &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/catholicleague.org\/release.php?id=2201\">wrongheaded<\/a>,&#8221; he says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[T]here is absolutely nothing in the Constitution of the United States that disqualifies a presentation of St. Augustine&#8217;s &#8220;just war theory,&#8221; and related biblical references. In fact, the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, as well as religious liberty&#8230;Moreover, biblical passages are often cited when referencing the work of Rev. Martin Luther King. Should we similarly censor them?<\/p>\n<p>I have read the materials used in the class, and can assure you that no one &#8212; save an anti-religious zealot &#8212; would find fault with them. I therefore urge you to stand fast against these bullies and do what is academically right and constitutionally protected: reinstate the class.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also notes that Michael Weinstein is a <!--more-->&#8220;foe of religious liberty&#8221; operating under the &#8220;guise of constitutional concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Donohue generally presents a conservative and favorable view of the military.\u00a0 In a twist on the media meme, last year he called for a Congressional investigation at the Air Force Academy for apparent <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/08\/group-calls-for-air-force-academy-congressional-investigation\/\">insensitivity toward <em>Christians<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To this point, some have implied a general Catholic support for Weinstein&#8217;s efforts, with John Hudson saying\u00a0&#8220;atheists\/Christians\u00a0agree&#8221;\u00a0the Air Force Chaplain-led course was wrong, citing the website USCatholic.org.\u00a0 They failed to note, of course, that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscatholic.org\/blog\/2011\/08\/no-sir-jesus-does-not-love-nukes\">Bryan Cones at the US Catholic<\/a> is opposed to nuclear weapons <em>in general<\/em>, not just any particular training course related to them.\u00a0 He ultimately says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m glad the Air Force will no longer try to make the case for the ethical use of nukes.
