{"id":12086,"date":"2011-07-26T02:00:19","date_gmt":"2011-07-26T07:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=12086"},"modified":"2013-10-14T16:34:51","modified_gmt":"2013-10-14T19:34:51","slug":"navy-secretary-censures-call-sign-co","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/26\/navy-secretary-censures-call-sign-co\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy Secretary Censures Call Sign CO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus censured Cmdr Liam Bruen, the recently retired Navy fighter squadron commander, over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/2011\/07\/navy-mabus-censures-former-co-in-call-sign-slur-case-072211\/\">naming ceremony of an administrative officer<\/a> who took offense.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a slap at the fading and officially out-of-favor tradition of racy, sarcastic and irreverent aviation call signs, a just-retired Navy fighter squadron commanding officer was censured by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus Wednesday for failing to halt and subsequently condoning the hazing of a junior officer at a 2009 call sign review board where assembled officers voted to call the officer &#8220;Romo\u2019s Bitch&#8221; the Navy announced&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Navy also counseled the unit&#8217;s second in command, Cmdr Damien Christopher, who had gone on to command, for violations of the Navy&#8217;s &#8220;policies on hazing and <!--more-->Equal Opportunity.&#8221;\u00a0 However, Christopher was praised for his subsequent performance and remains in command.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Navy Times <\/em>article also indicated &#8220;at least some&#8221; of the <em>other<\/em> officers who were present were also punished.<\/p>\n<p>The officer who <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/16\/navy-officer-files-ig-complaint-over-naming\/\">complained<\/a>, now-LTjg Steve Crowston, used an interestingly worded victory dance:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After 18 long months, the substantiated findings of sexual harassment and hazing are a victory for the gay, lesbian, and bisexual members serving in the Navy and throughout the Armed Forces&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His wording is somewhat odd, because as others have noted, the &#8220;derogatory&#8221; names he saw in his <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2006\/06\/13\/one-fighter-pilots-naming\/\">Naming<\/a> are amazingly common.\u00a0 In other words, he seems to have <em>thought<\/em> he was being criticized for being homosexual, while in fact he was being treated just like every other newly-named officer.<\/p>\n<p>Not to leave any doubt, in an email to the <em>Navy Times <\/em>Crowston went whole-hog:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cToday is a day to celebrate!\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe can all celebrate again on 20 September after the 60-day waiting period and again when the Defense of Marriage Act is finally buried.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well then.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus censured Cmdr Liam Bruen, the recently retired Navy fighter squadron commander, over the naming ceremony of an administrative officer who took offense.
