{"id":11722,"date":"2011-07-08T03:00:07","date_gmt":"2011-07-08T08:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/?p=11722"},"modified":"2011-07-08T00:32:22","modified_gmt":"2011-07-08T05:32:22","slug":"military-chief-faces-criticism-over-role-of-god-in-military-funerals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/08\/military-chief-faces-criticism-over-role-of-god-in-military-funerals\/","title":{"rendered":"Military Chief Faces Criticism over Role of God in Military Funerals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The head of the armed forces is embroiled in a controversy over <a href=\"http:\/\/old.news.yahoo.com\/s\/nm\/20110627\/wl_nm\/us_israel_army_religion\">the proper place of &#8220;God&#8221; in military funeral rites<\/a> &#8212; but its likely not the problem you think.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Israeli military is embroiled in a public battle over whether God ought to be mentioned at memorial rites for fallen soldiers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The controversy is over whether Yizkor, the Hebrew prayer of remembrance, should begin at military ceremonies with the words &#8220;May God remember&#8221; or &#8220;May the people of Israel remember.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Military policy calls for the version mentioning God to be used, but enforcement has been patchy in an apparent nod to the sentiments of the Jewish state&#8217;s secular majority.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is a seemingly odd controversy for a nation that is often assumed to be religious in some form.<\/p>\n<p>Back home in the US, the Department of Veterans&#8217; Affairs in Texas is <!--more-->being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2011\/06\/29\/houston-veterans-claim-censorship-prayers-ban-on-god-and-jesus\/\">accused of censoring &#8220;God&#8221; and &#8220;Jesus&#8221;<\/a> from funeral prayers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Three organizations &#8212; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion and the National Memorial Ladies &#8212; allege that the cemetery&#8217;s director and other government officials have created &#8220;religious hostility&#8221; at the cemetery and are violating the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents filed this week in federal court, the cemetery&#8217;s director, Arleen Ocasio, has banned saying &#8220;God&#8221; at funerals and requires prayers be submitted in advance for government approval, MyFoxHouston.com reports.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Texas has recently seen <a href=\"http:\/\/christianfighterpilot.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/07\/judge-rules-government-cannot-control-prayer-twice\/\">one case won on the side of religious freedom<\/a>, with a court saying the government cannot be in the business of dictating the content of its citizens&#8217; prayers.<\/p>\n<p>It would seem the controversy spans oceans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The head of the armed forces is embroiled in a controversy over the proper place of &#8220;God&#8221; in military funeral rites &#8212; but its likely not the problem you think.
